What kind of real world mileage can I expect out of one? It will be mainly highway as I will use it to commute to work(55 miles one way). Most of the driving is at highway speeds. I have heard differning numbers but was wondering if anyone here had any experience with them.

i agree with not getting an AWD. They bring teh suck with mileage.

I've got a 96 2WD with 185k and I can consistently get 16-17 mpg on the highway at 75-80 mph. Even managed 19.6 once, no clue how.

the 97.5 to 2000 with the 5.0 will get better than the 96 due to the way the awd detects slippage so the 97.5 to 2000 get better milage

I got between 17-20 and the only mod I had was a k&n filter
I heard a lot of people complain about the 96 model only detting 12-15

buddy of mine has an 00 and got 20 mpg when it was stock. you 'll want a 98 up they got an extra 30 horses. and the AWD t-case eats up alot of power. and they'll last forever. and they have a whole lot better tranny then the v-6 versions. i'd definitly would look at a 98-00 5.0 explorer or mountineer if i was in the market for a suv

My old man has a '98 AWD Explorer. He complains he gets between 15-17mpg. I gladly remind him Id trade vehicles for a week or so with him so he can see what shitty mileage is like!
