With the exception of cruise control, aren't all throttles manual? Did you mean a hand throttle?

Yeah, a hand throttle that you can lock in place when you have high battery drain like using a winch or something... or perhaps to keep an engine running in -40 degree weather.

Crazed has a pretty good hand throttle write up on here somewhere...it's pretty old , tho ('03-'04?)

He used a bicycle gear shifter and cable so that he has multiple engine "speeds" to chose from....

Had one on my 1971 FJ55 Landcruiser as well. Was for the PTO. Pretty cool. If you Google 'Manafree' (L/C specialists in Cali) you might be able to find a diagram that'll give you some more ideas.

His is one way to do it... Summit IIRC sells the cheap kits, which is basically just a lawnmower control, the cable, and the mount.

Their description brought up another good point for the use of a hand throttle. I didn't even think about all the times I wish I had 3 feet so my damn truck didn't stall on a hill offroad.

Looks like a wingnut on the lever itself, so you can set it in any position. I'm tempted to buy it right now.

Do you think it's necessary to have the light fixture pull cord after the cable like Crazed has?

The kit doesn't show anything like it in the PDF install guide, but I'd think that after a couple hundred pedal movements the cable might start to bend or fray. With the pull cord it can stay stationary when it's not in use.

Makes sense to me. If you only had cable, when you operated the gas pedal, then your hand throttle would move, too. This way, the chain falls slack when the throttle pedal is used...

In that case I don't see why some #150 pound test plastic-covered steel fishing leader wouldn't work as well?...........

Go to a bicycle shop and get one of those shifters with built in detentes...gives you more control, and they are cheep....just run the cable through the firewall, with a grommet, and attach to transfer case lever.....hook up with ball chain to the throttle and you are good to go. Did one on an old scout and it worked outstandingly. me thinks better results with EFI than carbed, especially on side hill thingies

Definitely need it. 95% of the time, the cheesy cable operated hand throttles aren't completely smooth and bind just a little, especially if they get used a lot.

The chain link resolves that problem.

And uh, I think I'd skip the fishing line. :duh

Plastic coated steel leader---not monofilament. Huge diff. Measure, cut to length, make your loops, crimp and install. Should last a lot longer than that wimpy lamp-chain stuff.

(Edit---this would be just for the throttle lever itself--not from the dash forward).........

Yeah, I was joking about the fishing line.

I'd skip using it anyway though. The ball-chain would have an easier ability to drop and sag when you press on the throttle. Wire steel would be more likely to bind, or bend and kink, considering the short distance you'd have it set up as.
