I am helping a buddy swap out an AOD in his 2wd F-150. He has my old transmission (still good when removed) but it is a 4wd AOD. Are the output shafts the same between the 2wd and the 4wd AODs? If not how hard will it be for us to swap the output shafts?

The output shafts are different. The 4x4 output shaft is shorter and has a bigger diameter. To replace it you will have to completely tear down the AOD (the output shaft is the first thing to go in, and the last to come out). And get a trans seal kit ($20)

This would be a great time for a clutch kit, or to beef it up

We already have a full seal kit for it. The trans is beefed up pretty well and has low mileage on some good clutches and steels. Thanks for the input. I guess we will be tearing down an AOD here soon.
