I downshift like it is a standard. I prefer the auto, but try and save wear and tear on my brakes. I guess it is an old habit. I dont ever over rev the engine. And I put it in neutral if sitting at idle.
Manually downshift to pass, or while under power--it won't hurt anything.
I've been told that shifting down with an automatic to use compression braking is hard on the clutches, if it's done frequently.
