Hey Fella's. Got a quick question for ya all. I found a Dana 44 out of an 80 jeep wagoneer. I can pick it up for $25. My question is how wide does it need to be. Do you think it will work? I am ready to do this swap. Thanks for all your help.

Don't bother.

not wide enough
is it leaf sprung?
think bolt pattern for wheels is different.
can't remember but it could be passenger diff as well.

there are still plenty of 76-79 Ford fullsize D44's out there.

Yeah but I can't find a 76-79 ford d44 for $25 that is complete. also it is a drivers side diff. and it is 51" from kuckle on house to knuckle on housing. And besides I am eight lugging it anyway.

Not sure what that measurement means "knuckle on housing"? an '80 waggy has to be about 4" or so short length wise.

Is it high pinion?

Complete D44's stock you should able to find pretty easily for about $200. Heck you don't need complete if you are 8 lugging it. All you really need is a D44 housing.

Edit: that's actually what I bought, a '78 housing, and then all the 8 lug outer stuff for a chevy setup. And of course the end plan was to run alloy shafts and joints anyway, which are a stock item for all the dealers as far as ford and chevy inners/outers go.

IIRC that housing is about 4-5'' narrower and a low pinion. I would pass unless your going to try to resell it to some jeep guys to help fund your project. Go search some of the heep sites, they will have the info you need.
