Drive train

Ok I have the greatest WIFE. Seance we have returned from MOAB we have talking about how the Bronco preformed. The decision has been the drive train from water pump to diff unjoints needs to be replaced.

I know I want Hilliker to do my E4OD, but that is just one part. I want everything to be done in AZ and I want it to be done right that means I won’t be doing it. Who in AZ builds the most reliable stroker motor and can change from a 5.0 to a 5.8 and make the transmission shift correctly. It all needs to be warrantee.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

I looked into going this route, for the cost I’m researching an LS swap. These Windsors are significant $$$ to build into anything fun, and then you’re limited to what can be done with the old computers. The LS transfer case has a driver side drop, so you could run the entire engine/4L80/transfer case. With my T-18 manual I should be able to bolt the LS to my current trans and not modify my drivelines. The 5.3 is rated for 100 more horsepower than my stock 302, so it should be a significant improvement.

You could also go Coyote for probably not much more money than building the Windsor. I’m not sure what you did for shock mounts and such with your SAS, but if a wide Coyote fits it’ll run better and be more tunable than a stroked Windsor. Cost isn’t as bad as you might think, you can have this at your door for about $5500.

Food for thought. I just want turnkey reliability modern power. If I could feasibly run a 2.3 Ecoboost from a Mustang I’d seriously consider it for the weight savings alone. I’ve been into the Broncos long enough (got mine in 1996) to have survived Chris Parrett’s Maximum Bronco 351 to 408 Stroked build, He dumped probably $20K into that and it always had issues. As much as I hate the idea of putting an LS into a Ford, there's some serious wisdom in this...

If you add aluminum heads, cam, and any kind of tuneable fuel injection to a 351 rebuild, you're talking $5k easy. I've been looking at 392 kits, and switching to a carb style EFI manifold, and it adds up quick. And you've still got what is basically a 1960s design that's going to get 10mpg if you're lucky.

Mars has a kit for an LQ4 (300hp/360tq) with 4L80 and manual TC at $4350. https://lsswap.parts/product/lq-4-6-0l-swap-kit/

Obviously, that's a used engine/trans, and there are going to be more costs associated, but the end result is a modern drivetrain that will perform better and likely get much better mileage. It does include a turnkey wiring harness and the engine/trans management, which is important.

I don't think I would do a "kit", because you can probably source everything a lot cheaper with some research, and potentially re-use some of of your current components (radiator?).

Overall though, it has a lot of merit, if your goal is a reliable Bronco with good performance.

If I had a no-limits "lottery" budget, I'd find a way to do an Ecoboost F150 engine/trans/t-case swap. I think that would be cool, and the powerband would be great for a Bronco. A Mustang 5.0 engine (we had a '17 GT for a while) would be a really poor choice... it needs to rev to make power, no bottom end torque.

For the Coyote, the Mars setup is for a truck engine which should be a better match for the Bronco than the Mustang version. My Coyote experience is limited to driving someone else’s, my buddy has a 2013 302 Boss, had a 2017 GT, has a 2018 GT, but I completely agree with the power band being too high for a Bronco.

I’m looking at kit vs piecing it together. Decent junkyard 6.0’s seem to be $1500 and up, 5.3’s are $500 and up. I can get the harness done and the ECM flashed/programmed for $600. Kitwise, the 6.0 from Mars looks like a better deal than the 5.3 because of the 6.0 cost.

I checked on the cost of doing an LS verses Coyote swap. Keeping with a Ford drive train would cost about $1800 to $2000 more than an LS. They make all kinds of kits for LS"s along with the rest of the running gear. So LS it is. (oh the shame)

LS3 6.0 with a 4L60E T case 208? This is the combination suggested by the three shops I got bids from.

What do you think.

LS3 refers to the corvette 6.2L engine. I would think LQ4 or LQ9, which are the truck 6.0L engines, would be the engine to use. I would strongly recommend a 4L80 trans instead of the 4L60. I would also think the NP261 manual tcase from the Silverado would be the simplest setup, and it is driver’s side drop. Maybe the 208 is better, but I don’t know much about them.

What kind of money were the quotes?

Anyone interested in running Upper Terminator June 29th either as a Night Run or an early morning run. If you haven't been on this trail body damage is a high probability. It will require 35s at least 1 locker and experienced driving skills with an intimate relationship between the skinny pedal and brake pedal.

I met a couple of guys here in young yesterday 7-27-19. They were from a group called TRAL. They said the group dose work on trails here in AZ. They are all volunteer and affiliated with the forest service. does anyone know about them?

Yes, they are vital to maintaining the trail system for the forest service as well as the off-road community. You can report seriously decade trail conditions due to storms or heavy use to them. They help keep the trails passable for everyone. Very reputable group. Would love to have our club affiliated with them.

did they say what trail they were working on up there?

If you go to the forum website it has a list of areas and the dates they will be Inspecting them. They do a lot of trail inspections that means they come up here they drive around they have a blast and then they write a report on it. When I get my bronco back I am planning on getting with them and see what they are all about.

Gunny, you can drive most anywhere, BLM, National Forest, State Land. Some just require permits if you are parking a trailer and unloading your wheeler, or some simply require a permit to drive on that trail system. Some permits are Free and are good for the day, 11 days, 3 months etc. Some have a small fee. A Website I recommend that has a pretty extensive(not all) trail system with GPX files info etc is https://www.trailsoffroad.com/ Or if you are in AZ and if you on Facebook search groups for the Az Bronco Club. we do monthly MnGs that the majority of the time have trail runs afterwards. Generally though there is always someone willing to go out explore the desert. Queston foe the AZ guys

hello to you all ,

my name is john , I live in ahwatukee and I have a beautiful 95 Eddie. I was wanting to know if you guys could steer me in the right direction on a person who could help me out with a few mods on my Bronco?
Since i live in Arizona i want a bronco that I can use as a daily driver and on trails, as I do not like sitting on my butt in the winter time

5.8 rebuild or diesel swap?
rebuild *.8 or 9 in install?
TTB or SAS and how to do it ?
automatic to 5 speed?
