For the past 3 or 4 months everytime I start my truck something squeals on the front passenger side of the belt system. Alll of the belts are tight and seem to be in good shape.
Does anybody have an idea on what the squealing is coming from.
I'm having the same problem and i bet is the idler pulley.
An easy way to find out is to remove the pulley (lefthand thread) from the tensioner and spray some PB on the bearing, reinstall and see if it helps.
Is less than $20 from the local auto store.
For clarification, that would only be a temporary fix as most Idler and Tensioner Pulleys appear to have a sealed bearing. If the squeel goes away and returns after several hours to several days, a new Idler Pulley and/or Fan Belt Tensioner is probably in order.
PB blaster and wd40 is a temp solution and will actually remove grease (if any is left) from the bearing... If you are going to to the troble of taking it off smear some axle grease or something on it if not replacing it all together.... not too much cuz you dont want that slung all over the place...
Try taking the belts off (1986 had V-belts),
then turn each of the pullies with your hand.
Don't spend money buying parts without looking just because someone states what *might* be the cause.
Spend a few minutes going over stuff to confirm what people are saying could be the problem,
basically we are not there to see and are really just guessing,
some guesses are better than others,
you have the vehicle in front of you, so look before spending money.
I know that I had the air pump start to sieze up and that was causing the belt to squeal on my Bronco.
