It's not a rat rod...it's a BAT ROD. And a 4 door one to boot.
Those beams are cast and should not be welded or bent. The earlier beams were forged and it was common practice to bend them for alignment. Although you can weld cast if you do the right process and use nickel rod I would still avoid it on a suspension piece.Good old Ford engineers must have know people would bend and extend these beams:
That's my plan. I ended up with a D44HD set since I didn't know what I was looking at in the junk yard.I think it'll look good with either tire.
The cast beams can still be bent, you just have to know what you're doing. I would just use the D50 or HD D44 beam ends to build the beams. That way you can cut and weld on them with ease.
My truck also has a 460/E4OD combo with 37"s and 4.11 gears (needs 5.38). I get about 6-8 mpg. You're right Philo on the beams. I maybe sourcing out a set of Econoline beams to extend.
I remember you telling me about jumping up to 37s plus I'm running a 460 gas engine which I'm sure is going to eat up gas like crazy.
I've seen a Centurion crew cab short bed that was five lug. It's used an 8.8 and a D44 TTB up front. I would def want a FF 9" or have hubs built that convert the sterling to 5x5.5. On the front a D44 snout is actually stronger than the 3/4 ton 2wd one but you end up with smaller brakes. I would look into the T-bird swap if I used those ends. I would avoid any beam that uses a 1/2 ton 2wd end. Remember, Broncos don't stop all that great with their braking system and your four door is probably 1500lb heavier. What is your thoughts on converting from 8 lug to 5 lug wheel patterns? I want to go with 5 on 5.5 so that they match my other two Broncos so that I can always have a spare set of wheels in case I need them. I'd run 5/8 lugs so I welcome your thoughts.
Chris
Philo any useful links to the T Bird Swap? Sorry for all the questions but thank you for responding.
