Most of you might remember a rant I sent to bendcable, some weeks ago, about the hundreds of spam emails I get on a weekly basis. Naturally, after never getting any sort of reply - not even having the decency to send me any sort of automated reply, I sent another bitch-rant, from their website

The following is queued for delivery to:
[email protected]

From: [email protected] Subject: Question about spam

Question: Some time ago, I sent an email, asking when bendcable was going to take care of the spam that leaks it's way in everyone's email inbox. Naturally, I never got a reply... why is that? I understand there's spam pounder for that, but not only can I not get it set up right, I don't believe I should be the one filtering it out. I've followed the instructions that were sent to me, to the "T", and I still get spammed. In all my years of using other ISP's, this is the one one that's required ME to take care of MY spam. It's gotten to where I don't check my mail for a week at a time anymore. I don't care to know how to lower my mortgage rates, or how to "impress my woman" with a bigger penis, with help from male enhancement pills, that I was able to purchase at a lower interest rate, in order to "make her scream". It makes no difference to me what products, or services, anyone is selling. Nor do I care abuot customizing my market with some kind of new fandangled business proposal. I've also gotten a couple emails about my bendcable account being suspended, from a SPAMMER! Imagine my surprise when it was clear to me that BendCable, clearly, made no attempt at stopping even this. What, exactly, am I paying for? I've received 133 emails, in a 6-day span... only ONE wasn't spam. For the love of God, and all that is Holy, please do something about this. I'd gladly forward all the crap I get on a daily basis, but I'm sure you have your own in-house filter to prevent that

i stole that from someplace, i just dont remember where. ive added to it. man i hate spam too. i have 7 aol screen names so i get the most file space on their server. i never use them. one has 1 email and another has 157. i have never used those addresses in registering for stuff or sent email out or given the addresses out. hmmm. so you know that is a program running that will send mail to [email protected] ISP here.com and go til it gets to [email protected] ISP here.com so they gotta hit every combo of letters & numbers. i would imagine its a pretty slick program, but its a pain for us. i wish we could flood them back thru the originators ISP

If any of you use OUTLOOK or OUTLOOK EXPRESS, it's fairly simple to setup RULES in your program that can filter much of this crap out for you.
Can't stop it... but can at least route it to the trash bin directly and make it easier to get to the stuff you actually want.

BTW... I sincerly doubt the SPAM will ever end.

Depends which program and versions you are using.

Outlook 2002 go to:
TOOLS > RULES WIZARD

Now there are a few ways to set this up. Here's the 2 that seem to get rid of MOST of the crap.

SPAM KILLER #1
- APPLY THIS RULE AFTER MESSAGE ARRIVES
- DELETE IT
- EXCEPT IF MY NAME IS IN THE TO: or CC: BOX

SPAM KILLER #2
- APPLY THIS RULE AFTER MESSAGE ARRIVES
- WITH "FRIEND" IN THE SUBJECT
- DELETE IT

Does anyone you know send you e-mail that says "friend" in the subject line? Not anybody I know.
Anyway... these will give you an idea of some things you might try on your own programs. Adjust them according to your specific needs and you'll be at least a little happier sorting through your mail and avoiding much of the useless crap.
KEEP IN MIND... this is NOT a full answer to the SPAM concern.
It still has to acutally download all the crap off the server and that slows you down. The mail still is getting to your PC, it's just getting routed to your "DELETED ITEMS" or "TRASH" folder. You still neeed to EMPTY OUT that folder, or set your program to do that for you. Just FYI.

Yip that's somewhat how I have mine. But I have mine setup for people in my "Distribution List". When I get an email from them it got to a specific folder with their name on it. Anyother emails that come in I just highlight and delete.

If you run Outlook, this is an awesome, free, probability based spam filter that "learns".
http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/windows.html
After you train it, it works very well. I never get spam in my inbox with this installed, and once you hit the "recover from spam" button on your good emails that end up in the Junk Mail folder, you never see email from that person get rejected again.
