Yeah I'd stay with 99 and 2000. The forged rods are good for a lot more abuse then the powdered metal rods are. Shame on International (or Ford, whoever's fault it was) for cheapening up one of the most critical parts of the engine.

supposedly the pmr's can only safely take 400 RWHP, nitrous is bad for them. your going to need bigger injectors to hit 400 with diesel only.

the fordged rods can handle nitrous, propane, meth, and alot of diesel. 99.5-2000 are the new body styled ones. there is still alot of aftermarket out there for these.

mine is a 01, 107k on the clock and it is just like new.

but for the average guy, a later model year truck will work fine.

I like the 97, mine has 220,000 miles and still runs clean and like new.

my lacrosse coach had a '97 7.3 it had 223,xxx miles on it when he sold it, he got rid of it cause the frame was badly rusted, the engine could have gone another 100,000 miles though. He replaced it with an 03 (it might be the 6.0L?) and that has alot less power and has had problems

340k on my dad's '99 F350...50/75/100/140hp Chip in it since 100k.
I think we have a glowplug or two out, but it still runs well.
