after a month at a shop my mechanic gave up & asked me to tow the bronco home. He changed the ignition switch on the column. Dropped a new distributor in. It fires up if you hold key in the start position but when released into the run position it dies. He disconnected the starter wire to the starter regulator. Has someone else turn the key while he touches the starter wire to the starter regulator. It fires up & stays running. As soon as you put it in gear it dies. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Somebody with more knowledge of the specific year might know for sure.

Ok ignition has a start circuit and run circuit. Your start circuit is fine. The run circuit is controlled by the starter solenoid. That why it has 2 small post on the front. Someone will be a long shortly with a snip of the ignition wiring and I can tell you more then.

On the solenoid, how many wires are connected to the side where the wire to the starter connects? Should only be the wire to the starter. Guessing that the run circuit wiring is on the wrong side of the solenoid.

If you turn the key to the run position, does the radio come on, the dash board engine lights come on.
Will the headlights come on?
If none of this works, sounds like what jfourdyce is saying.

Well, here's the one in my '89, it has the 5.8.
Ignore the white wire, I added that. The rest is factory.

The truck should start in N or Park. If it doesn't it implies something wrong with the MLPS.
If it starts in both but stalls when you shift the trans into gear it could be a transmission issue, or the rear axle or tcase is locked up tight. From there you can remove the rear driveshaft to confirm the rear axle and the tcase are both ok. If they are, then you know it's a transmission problem.
