Bronco tire step

I got tired of killing myself leaning over the side of the bronco. The step stools that I had and the front bumper just wasn't enough any more. I had seen one of these in an add before but for smaller trucks with smaller tires. I had been wanting to make one of my own for a while now and wrenching on the bronco the other day was the straw that brooke the camels back.
2-31" and 2-13" 1 1/2 angle

tacked in place, the outer angles are at an angle to match the tires tread pitch

angles for the step 1-31" and 2-24"

all welded together

3 2x6 boards fit ok

2-24" kicker legs

side view

front view
I put a leaf spring on the bottom of the kickers to spread the load across the tire.

It worked out pretty damn good to, it puts me right up there in the bay so I can easily reach about anywhere on that side. Its not all that heavy either, all the angle is 1/8" to btw.

thats a sweet idea! another project for the weekend!
How tall are you B-NUT? And are those tires 35's?
That is a great idea! It sure beats slipping off a stool!lol
Those tires look to be either 31's or 33's.

They're deffinitly not 31's...

edit::doh0715: A quick check on his bronco info says 35's.. Duh!
I am 6'2" and its still a pain to wrench around under the hood, mainly because its lifted. I would say 9 out of 10 times under the hood its some where hard to reach.
That's a great step. I'm 6'2" & my son is 6'4" & we both have trouble reaching stuff. Our '86 has 35's with no lift & still hard to reach in there.

It wasn't hard to make either, I wish I would have built it a long time ago :doh0715:

Nice, it sure makes working under the hood less cumbersome, huh?.

I made one a couple years ago like this

I also made one that mounts to my stock bumper

I like those walt they definately look lighter than the ones I made. I realy didn't need it to be that big but I figured whats it going to hurt to have some extra room to stand. I dont realy need one for the front with the giant winch bumper on there.

Both of yours look great. When I did valve cover gaskets I borrowed the Wife's two stepper from the kitchen. Not ideal!!! Yall's are much better.

Bronconut,
You got a link to your bumper? Build or buy?
Thanks,
Tyler

Thanks, I didn't think you needed one for the front of your rig, but I figured someone else who is handy with steel might get some ideas. I posted pics of it when I made them but it was in a different section.
Nice builds. The first thing I bought after getting my Ram and realizing that being 6'3" still wasn't tall enough to be able to perform any regular and future maintenance was one of those collapsible units from HitchMate. It's been really great when it came down to working on both the Ram and the Bronco and it fits the 33" tire on the Ram pretty well.

The only drawback is forgetting it on the tire when you've spent all day working on teh truck and the last few hours weren't spent in the engine bay.

Don't ask me how I know this.....

It might hang out a bit longer here and some one could find it in a search to.

That might just be the one I got the idea from, I had seen something similar a few years ago for smaller tires and that was the end of it. I never seen or heard of it again and I guess I had forgot to but had wanted to make myself one several times just never got around to it untill now.
One of these was in my truck when I bought it.

I like yours better and it was probably cheaper.
They're definitely not 31's...

lol I did see that but they looked smaller in the pic! Sorry if I insulted anyone!
What made you ask?lol
Great designs ! All of them!:rockon I like the bumper step too!
Yup, that is definately what I had seen. :thumbup I also see it fits up to a 37/12.5 :rockon, I definately like the fact that it folds up to. That might be the first revision of mine is make it fold up. It works good for now and it does what I need, its not like I am going to pack it around with me anywhere but taking up less space in my building is always a plus. I just use it while wrenching around under the hood.

Didn't cost me a dime... :toothless
That's the one I have. It comes with a zippered carry case and I keep it behind the back seat in my Ram. I've actually thought about buying another one for the Bronco and keeping one in each vehicle. You never know if you may need to get into the engine compartment to work on something away from home. The HitchMate works good and holds my fat @$$ without flexing.
How much was it?
