I bought my '79 (Bob) a year ago. I've been building it up ever since. Well, over the weekend I finally got it stable enough to start driving it. It had a pretty good knock in it that's consistent with engine RPM. I was running probably a 5W20 oil (it's what I had on the shelf) so I swapped to a 20W50 just to see if it'd help. I have no damn clue how many miles are on this motor. The new oil didn't help at all and the oil that came out is black as sin even after only being idled in the driveway and driven a total of maybe fifteen miles.
I have probably five grand into this truck at this point in time. It's basically ready to run (just need to build trans crossmember and install the Duff arms), but I REALLY don't have the energy to go through an engine build now, if that's the problem. My plan has been to build/install a 4BT, but after seeing how capable my Jeep is on these local trails it's been just as tempting to sell off the Bronco and just throw a 2" lift and 35s on the Jeep. I've been through almost every damn bolt on the Bronco, including pulling the motor to swap all the gaskets. I'd have done a quick rings/bearings swap at that point but was planning to just limp it along with the 351M until I figured out what motor I actually wanted.
If I do have to do the motor I'm looking at my constant problems with my courtesy lamp harness... not a single light in the dash works... temp guage doesn't work... heater core needs to be replaced... Duff arms need to be installed...
ugh. Make it stop. I'm tired of constantly wrenching on this mother
and it's- and- GRR... :banghead
