ok simple enough...you must have the seat belts that were installed by the manufacturer in your vehicle...

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety standard no 208

Passenger Cars, except convertibles (Effective 12/11/89), Convertibles (Effective 9-1-91), Multipurpose Passenger Vehicles and Trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 4,536 kg (10,000 lbs.) or less
(Effective 9-1-91)
Shall be equipped with integral lap and shoulder belts at every forward facing, outboard designated seating position.
Ok. I'm not a lawyer, and I would check with your local state laws...but...

You have to have a third brake light if your car came with one. Period. You do not have to have the factory third brake light. You can get one that plugs into a trailer receiver, or you can mount one (like off a jeep) that mounts above your spare tire. it has to light up when you hit the brakes, and it has to be red. Thats it. Think about it...you buy a new pickup..its got a third brake light on the cab. You add a camper shell...they usually build a third light into the camper shell so you can still be "legal".

There is no requirement for shoulder belts in the rear seat. There is no requirement in my state for seatbelts in the rear at all (rear seat folds away remember?). The requirement is (in my state, and most) the age of the passenger, and if they have their seatbelt on. You can swap out the lap belts from an earlier year, or get some better lap belts from Jegs etc.
Thats right your not a lawyer and you don't know the acts. First off you can't install a 3rd brake light to trailer receiver, it has to be above centralized above the rear tail lights, and redwagon took care of the seat belt act.

I would figure they would be grandfathered but if not wouldnt that technically make mine and yours illegal, unless you modified you dont have shoulder belts right?
You need to look at the dates the act was implemented...9-1-91...so we are ok.
i thought so i just wanted to make sure of that, most of these V.A. cops are anal, they try to FIND crap to ticket you for.
