6026 Views 15 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Alvin in AZ
Currently i have a 1996 Bronco that has the Gauge cluster without a tach and it is driving me nuts b/c it is also a standard and i want to know how high my rpms are. i was going to buy one with a tach off of ebay is this a pretty straight forward swap? are the wires already there for everything just to plug in and be set to go?

yes it is a straight forward swap. I did this just yesterday. it is plug and play for 94-96.

just take them apart to reuse your PSOM that way your mileage will stay the same

I just did mine today. I pulled one from a 95 F-150.Then I pulled mine out of my 95 F-150. I dissasembled and cleaned the donor cluster.I removed the speedo from my cluster and installed it into the donor cluster so I keep my milage and PSOM settings.Installed the donor into my truck and fired it up........Presto, on working tachometer.
92-93 and 94-96 are the same. either one will work but the lights will be different.

I've been trying to research this very topic..I've got a 84 IL6 standard..will my cluster swap this easy?..I know it needs to be a 80-86 year model cluster..will the automatic swap...any help would be great!

I swapped a gauge cluster into my '81. The BIGGEST pain of the whole project was getting the knobs off for the headlights and windshield washers so I could get the cluster out. There's a tab inside the knob that you have to press to release them. Try some dental hooks or tiny hex wrench, and bring some patience.

I don't know if all of the gauges swap individually, but I believe they do. I just swapped the whole thing because the one I put in was so close to the one I took out. Plus, I wanted the tripometer, and it's in the same gauge as the odometer.

There's just a big electrical plug in the back of the cluster. Unplug it and plug the new one in. When I fired it up, my tach popped to life and was right on.

As for the automatic part, there's a little piece with the R D 2 1, etc and a small cable that pulls on a needle. If you have an automatic, and the cluster is from a manual, just reuse yours.

AbandonedBronco you were right on!..I pluged mine in yesterday...and presto..the tach was alive and working well!..I'm so pumped (its the little things in life right!)..Thnks for your help and knowledge.BRM
Awesome! Glad it all worked. :thumbup

I know what you mean on the little things. The tach was probably one of my favorite additions.

Did you press the button on the top+front of the light switch then gently
wiggle and pull the knob plus its stem out or pull the knob off the stem? LOL :)

Do yourself a favor and buy a "cotter pin puller"! :)
Not to pull cotter pins with (I use Klein line pliers for that) but it will be useful
for all sorts of stuff, guaranteed! :) Like pulling them Ford ********;) wire
connectors for one. :)

And for the Bumps, Dents Cab-Overs and don't know what else...

{edit}
That's a piece of 1" water pipe, just used an "automatic center punch" and
short piece of tape measure, messed with it until I had three equal-spaced
dents, then ground it out best I could, then went to files.
...easy and fun for a tinkering fool like "Butthead in AZ".
Don't tell me you throw away "bad" tape measure tape? :(
Break it into pieces, danggit. ;)

As always, the right tool for the job!
I didn't know you could pull the whole rod out. I just removed the knobs. However, the headlights are the easy one since you can pull it out further anyway to turn the headlights on. The windshield wiper's the tough one!

Turns out there's lottsa kinds of "cotter pin pullers". :/
Wanted a picture from Sears since that's what I've got.

The first one I found on the side of the road, man has that been a great find! :)
Same idea as you were talking about on the little-wrench/dental-pick thing.
