Confused on GT40 heads

4610 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  5.0_Bronco
Ok so my timing cover needs to be replaced and I have decided to go ahead and upgrade to gt40 heads and a mild cam. Also if i can a gt40 intake. My question is i want gt40 heads not gt40p (cause i hear there more of a pain in the ass than there worth). I have searched and most post leave me confused. So, on what year model explorer do the regular gt40 heads come on

Also its a 90 ford bronco with a 302 and is that engine roller rocker motor

do a search there are some good threads out there with info ...but in a nutshell the gt40 heads came on 95-97 1/2 explorers with the 5.0>>> 97 1/2 and up have the gt40p.. the p heads will work fine but you need to do headers as well cause of the spark plug angle there are several headers out there that will work just gotta find the right ones
you dont have a roller motor btw they were in the 95-96 broncos
Ok i thought i didnt have a rollr motor. Is there anything i have to do to the motor to make it roller ready because i cant remember anymore

Here's some pictures showing the markings on the GT40 heads. The GT40 heads were used on the 5.0 Cobra Mustangs, and the 95, 96 and early 97 Explorers. I've heard that all 97's had the GT40 heads, I don't know when Ford switched to the P heads. The GT40 heads have GT cast into them in several places, also if you can see the end of the head the GT40 heads have three bars cast into the end, the GT40P heads have four bars cast into the head. FSB member Cobra Jet has an excellent thread on GT 40 heads and headers from his own practical experience, what works and doesn't with fab or no fab etc..
