CRUISE CONTROL STAYING ON!!!!!

2933 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  TS 90F150
driving home tonight i turned my cruise control on at forty miles an hour drove for about three miles went to turn it off with the button on the steering whell, nothing, tap the break, nothing, lay on the brakes a little, nothing, speed up to about sixty, nothing, finally take the last corner before my house shift into to nuetral shut of the truck before the motor starts rapping out and coast home. any ideas as to the cause would be awesome. i'm hoping the computer will just reset itself over night. also wats the aftermarket options for computer chips for the 92-96 FSB with the 351W motor?

WOW... that would be terrifying! I dont have an answer for a repair, but I would be taking the cruise cable off the throttle body before I cranked the truck again and would not be putting it back until I knew it was not going to do it again. Good quick thinking on handling yourself.

yo,
Try these checks; I don't know the date Ford went from da VAc CC sys to the Electr sys; may have been a Model Year (MY) or mid-MY change in 92?
For vac op sys

Vacuum Dump Valve disconnects the speed control whenever the brake pedal is depressed.
1. Make sure that the brake pedal is fully released and the valve's plunger is in contact with the brake pedal adapter.

2. Move the valve forward in its retaining clip until 3mm (1/8 inch) of the valve plunger is exposed.

3. Make sure that the brake pedal is still in the fully released position, against its stop.

for later MY and from 93 to 96..

Do the stoplamps light when the brake pedal is depressed? If not, check the stop lamp circuit fuse, stop lamps, wiring and stop lamp switch.
The speed control system also interacts with the brake system, and with the clutch system on manual transmission vehicles. Speed control requires electrical continuity through the stoplamps (and clutch switch on manual transmission vehicles) in order to operate. Proper stoplamp operation is required if the system is to disengage with brakes. Proper clutch switch operation is also required on manual transmission vehicles if the system is to disengage with clutch pedal actuation. Stoplamp and clutch switch circuit diagnosis is detailed in Section 37-05 of the appropriate Shop Manual.

Does the horn work? If not, check the horn circuit fuse, horn relay and horn circuit wiring.

AMPLIFIER
* Check for unseated connectors at the speed control amplifier. The amplifier location varies by carline. Refer to the appropriate Shop Manual, Section 37-05, for location.
* Look for loose or unseated connector pins.
* Check for broken wires at the connectors.

SERVO: Check for the following items.
* Disconnected or cut vacuum hose from the servo to the manifold source.
* Loose or disconnected electrical connector, or broken wire.
* Loose, or cracked plastic elbow at the servo.
* Disconnected, or loose, dump valve hose at the servo.

is your CC deactivation unit toast?
i'm still not sure what caused it but luckily the computer did reset like i expected it too. no problems since but i've also been avoiding my cruise control since this incident.
My 90 cruise control would not turn off when I depressed the brake pedal. The brake light fuse was blown. Replaced it and everything worked properly again. I see Miesk5 has already given you some trouble shooting leads.

Mine hapened because the sleve inside the spring had broke an lodged itself open.

Yo Tim,
Thanks!

Can you post the Build Date of your Bronco to help narrow down when Ford went from Vac to elect?
It will be on:
Door Jamb Label (Certification Label, also referred to as the Patent Plate, Data Plate & the Warranty Plate)
as shown in this pic by W.

It is a F150 though. But, I'll be glad to when I get the chance. It is having its heart, lungs and brain transplant---finally. Hope to have it back soon. If you see my post about the new engine and transmission and how I like it remind me of this thread. (In case I forget)

I thought I had read on here that the cruise control didn't change until like 92-93 though.

yo, OK, I have Bronco on my mind...lol
The change-over is iffy in my mind;
the Recall for the ELECTR CC is for 93-96 Bronco, 94-02 F-150...etc.

All Vacuum CC info from Ford shows for 86-91 Bronco, Aerostar, Econoline, Explorer, F-150, F-250, F-350, Ranger & cars...

Chilton show VAC CC in 92 Bronco
Do your brake lights work? Sonds like the brake light switch might not be working.
Miesk5 I'll see if I can get a cell phone picture of the information you want tomorrow.

later
