Dome Courtesy Light Switch

I've replaced bulbs, checked the fuse, and now I don't know where to start looking to find out why they won't turn on. In the mean time, do the switches stay up or down to shut off the light? They haven't worked since I purchased the FSB.

Thanks

Are you reffering to the map lights?
Sure. The two lights on either side of the dome light.

Thanks
Ok, did you test the switch?
No, I didn't. I've taken the dome/map housing down, removed the metal/tin "doors" over the map lights, and changed the bulbs. Where the switch is located I can't get into. Its fused into the outer housing so the only way I can get into the switch is to break all the plastic "fusings" which would, in turn, mean I would have to get a new one. I just wanted to know if its up for off or down for off.
Just a thought but be sure to tighten the screws up real good when re-installing the housing. If I turn one screw so much as a 1/10 of a turn in either direction, the map lights go out. I want to say that switch up is off.
This is a picture of the connector behind the driver side seat belt retractor. This is a common area of problems. On mine, the wires had corroded and fell out of the connector. These wires go to the dome light.

Thanks....I'll have to get that cover off and check there.

ditto
Looks like I have the same problem....short in the connection..same two green wires.

Now I have to find a new connector. I'll have to try the junkyard I guess.

in the mean time, you could use a crimp on set of connectors. that is how i did it.

That's how I fixed my dome light issue in my 80 never bothered with the connector.
Thanks for the help guys...I crimped and taped last night and they're working again. On one of the green, the the inside wiring was black from the short I guess and where it connected to the first connector it also had some corrosion on it. I hope it holds for awhile at least.
Courtesy light wiring. Sources of wires and color pattern correct wire match ??

Hello.

91 FSB 5.8 Automatic

My truck was have some serious power leakage related to the dome light/map lights and rear floor light.

My dome light would not turn off unless we removed the bulb! Tried that and it still died.

Basically my battery would just completely die within 48 hours of sitting - I mean dead as can be - a jump would not even get it started - had to take it to my shop to get a charge.

So my mechanic said I had a problem with my dome/map and rear floor lamp electrical.

The only solution that worked temporarily was removing the fuse for this circuit - the batt would not die if the fuse was out.

So I did some research. Found this thread and some others, and ended up opening the connector area behind the driver seat where all these wires join.

I found some wires hanging out, dried, up and more or less fried.

So I snipped and crimped extended wire on all connections. Removed the (junk!) clamps, and did a manual wire.

It took me some time to get everything seeming to work right, but now my dome light and map lights work as they should. But when I try to connect up the rear floor lamp wires the dome light goes turns on and the console switch will not turn it off. So it just stays on!

This might be a totally stupid question, but I have a total of 16 wires (2 sets of 4 on either connecting side) and they all appear to have a matching one - blue/black, green/yellow, red/black, solid black

There is one set of 4 wires coming from the wall of the truck, and another that comes from the 4 floor. Then 2 additional sets of 4 coming from the wall.

My question is how the hell do I know which goes with which. Cause I can match the colors, but not sure if I should go from wall to all or floor to wall with certain wire sets... I tried to read a wiring diagram, but I could not find one for a 91 FSB 5.8 Automatic.

If anyone knows a simple way to determine which wires goes with which sets, I am all ears. Spent the day in 95 degree weather doing all of my splicing, crimping, and re-wiring.... I really cleaned it all up nice. Will send some pics when completed.

Thanks for any insight to this annoying problem.
