On the days it doesn't work I can push the button and see the alternator gauge move a bit so it makes me tend to believe the button is still good and power is getting to the motor. I have taken the door panel off and checked all of the connections...

Did you check voltage across the motor connector while you had the panel off & the button pressed? It would be REALLY useful to know that voltage when the motor is NOT working.

Has anyone else ever experienced this problem and if so what's the problem?

Thats's what the SEARCH feature is for.

If vibrating the motor causes it work again temporarily, the motor is bad.
