Bronco has 107K and I’m doing a bunch of updates and upgrades. I wasn’t planning much past an additional cooler and to replace with a deep pan from B&M and an updated filter from Ford. I’m planning on just dropping the pan replace filter and pan and top off with fresh fluid.

But, my magnet looked like this

As I cleaned the magnet with a sacrificial t-shirt and brake cleaner, I started to doubt my plan and am considering just pulling the trans and have it rebuilt.

the fluid is still a nice red and smells like proper halitosis like ATF (no burned smell at all). Shifted fine. Never gave me any reason to doubt my plan. Not sure what to think, to be honest.

If you got the funds you might as well have it rebuilt, your pretty much there with the engine out. Too many times I have said ohh I’ll replace that part next time….. famous last words….. and a couple weeks later I got failure and get to pull it back apart. My kid just done it twice, top end only, just to have the bottom end fail, one Honda and one Subi

Is that B&M pan for an E4OD? It doesn't look like the correct shape or bolt pattern.
It’s this one, but am adding a moroso gasket. Learned to love those pan gaskets…

Also this filter

Agreed. I think ours looks more like this:

Consider upgrading the line size and cooler size (over oem). That's where the e4od is lacking compared to the newer transmissions that last longer because of better cooling. Seattle FSB has a line upgrade write up.
Not a bad idea, found a post from him about the 6an lines/fittings. Thanks

I went to two trans shops and talked to them about what I found, and they both said as long as there weren’t solid chunks of metal or clutch material present in the pan, the fluid that came out was in good shape and the fact it didn’t display bad symptoms prior to dropping the pan, neither recommended rebuilding. Good, actual Mercon V (not suitable in place of Mercon V stuff) should be the ticket.

I’m going to assume everything is fine, for now.

I saw your review, I see how much Lightning guys love them and sending Paul an email now. Thanks for the tip!
Sure thing, just take your time and talk with paul, he can taylor them to any driving style. If you want to go for broke there is the level 10 transmission route lol

While you have it a part install a punisher valve body

Definitely install Punisher valve body.

You dont necessarily need to upgrade the cooler hose size, but i do recommend the biggest cooler you can fit. If you had a built motor along with a fully built trans then id consider upping the cooler line size. The big trans cooler Ford offered in the later model (94-97) pickups is massive and does a great job keeping the E4OD cool. And you can get them cheaper than an aftermarket cooler.

I just found and read his website, my trans is shifting hard intermittently. It would rev way up and then manually shift (bypass the electronic shifting).

I was finally able get to my trans shop while it was doing it so they could see what it was doing and they told me it may very well be the valve body and the little valves and springs inside sticking.

Paul deff knows his stuff, supposedly he does some mods to the valve body as well to help prevent failure by fixing the known problem areas.
