Engine All of the Sudden won’t Start Opinions? UPDATE

I suspect it as a fuel issue so far as when I put my fuel pressure test kit on and didn’t get any fuel spraying out on the Schrader valve either while connecting or disconnecting. Just air hissing.

1986 5.0l 302 original unmolested

I am not a mechanic. And am just speculating but I think it maybe the sendingunit assembly. My fuel gauge works and I can hear the in line fuel pump trying to do something,

my next order of business is im gunna replace the canister fuel filter which is in unknown status. That thing is a ************. Any tips on how to loosen it without taking the whole assembly out?

Truck has the original fuel pump and I suspect OG one in the tank. The filter between in line pump and engine was replaced by me when I first got the truck

If it ran great and just suddenly won't start, have you checked fuses/relays? Power going to the pump?

Air hissing makes me think the fuel level is too low or something is amiss with your in-tank pump. Does it continually pump air out the Schrader valve when the pump is energized?

Where is the fuel pump relay for the in line? I saw there was some 10 amp fuse under the steering wheel for something fuel related. It wasn’t blown.

I also figured the pump in the tank has power to it since my gas gauge is working. Are those two separate things? When it comes to power.

I’ll have to check that later. Could it be just a simple clogged fuel filter?

Luckily for you, I did a write up on the canister.

Is it next to impossible to unscrew it while it’s still on the truck?

I have done this with the canister in the truck about 30 years ago. I can tell you, taking two bolts out and some fuel lines made this much easier to do than working around the transfer case shield to get the seal to seat properly.

Update:

ok I took the fuel filter canister off. It was caked with sand and some small scale.

after that I half keyed the truck 3 or 4 times and no fuel came out of the hose. I’m guessing it’s gunna need a new in tank pump and possibly a new fuel tank?

Yummy! That's the insides of your tank slowly escaping through the fuel line.

FWIW...I bought a new tank with pump and strainer installed from Rock Auto trying to avoid your issue. Pump crapped out in three months. Apparently they used the absolute cheapest piece of Chinese garbage they could find.

What brand pump so I can avoid? I’m thinking just getting a new tank saw one on oreillys for 155 bucks 33 gallons. Bronco graveyard didn’t have the right gallon tank

update: dropped the tank. Broke one of the connectors off at the sending unit…. How bad is this gunna be to fix?

Shouldn't need a new fuel tank that is just 40 years of dirt in the filter housing. You can run fuel injection hose with clamps to replace that line or dorman sells a repair kit to replace the fuel lines. Cap off the fuel tank and pressure wash it off. New fuel sending unit assembly with oring and retainer ring. The fuel sending unit should come with both of those.

cool I think I'll just go by the auto parts store and see if they have that repair kit. I've already bought the tank off amazon, it was 105 bucks free shipping. Figured why not. its over 35 years old. I am fixing to order a Dephi complete sending unit off Rock Auto along with about 200 dollars more of stuff
