Yeah me neither, i just upgrade parts every so often. Last year i bought a new mother board, so naturally i had to buy new ram (DDR  ) and a processor (P4 2gig). Next up in the list is to replace my slightly outdated (4 or so years old) video card.

as for 'off the shelf' computers......
My company just bought a new comp from Dell for the secretaries, and HOLY CRAP is it filled with junk. There mustve been 15-20 icons on the desktop! I could probably sit there for over a half hour deleting crap that theyd never even consider using.

nice, similar to what I'm running

Gigabyte GA-7VAX
Athlon XP 2500+ Barton Core
512 DDR 2700 Ram
80 GB Maxtor Hard Drive
HIS Radeon 9200 VIVO Video
16x Pioneer DVD Rom
16x10x40 HP CD Burner
Thermaltake Volcano 7 Cooling Fan
Soundblaster Live! Value
Antec Case Cooling Fan

I beleive that about it, this computer has slowly been built up ver the years, so I can't put a price on the total, bit I just replaced the Video Card, the Hard Drive, the Motherboard, RAM, and CPU in the last year

I got one of those CD bureners, Cost me $10 at a back-to-school sale in Detriot :brownbag

100mb internal Zip for $17 off eBay

One of my Aux fans got noisy on me, so I'm going to replace it with 2 smaller ones.

Anybody try to build their own laptop????
I failed at my IMB Thinkpad 600 :cry
Not sure how to fix it now

I too tried and failed at a Thinkpad 600...then again the battery is dead and cost more than trying to fix the dang thing. I'll stick to building desktops..though I've gotten into the habbit of only a cpu fan/heatsink and leaving the case fully open.
