If a mechanical fuel pump was starting to go bad and under load didnt deliver enough, fuel subsequently leaning the mixture out preignition would follow, yes? If so could it be possible that only 2 of 8 plugs show preignition while the other 6 look god leaning to leaned out (hot)

A mechanical fuel pump is one that does not have electrical power. I had an in tank pump that was going out, it would die and not start when hot. Sounds more like you have a major vacuum leak.

Whether the pump is mechanical or electric if it cannot supply enough fuel, with the resulting loss of pressure, it will cause a lean condition. Yes it is possible to have only 2 plugs showing signs of detonation. Uneven cooling and fuel/air distribution between cylinders is a real world issue in all stock engines. Some worse than others.
