I have a 79 bronco that I'm swapping the 25.5 gal tank to a 33 gal plastic tank. The 25 gal tank has a factory skid plate. My question is, will the current skid plate work with a 33 gal tank, and will I have to replace the upper straps. Any help would be appreciated.

About this capture
My Bronco came with the 33 gallon gas tank. The only other option for 78 and 79 Bronco's was the 25 gallon tank. If you are lucky enough to have the 33 gallon tank, then you also have the factory skid plate. The 25 gallon tank did not come with a skid plate, it uses two straps to support it.
I decided to replace my old metal tank with a polyurethane tank. There was some corrosion on the bottom of my old tank, and it was just a matter of time before it would have started leaking. This is a very easy swap to do, and well worth the $110 cost. There is no more corrosion to worry about and the polyurethane is much more durable than metal.
There are a few things to note before you make the swap. The tanks are available for 78's and 79's in both sizes. The 33 gallon tanks are the same except for two things. 79 tanks have an emissions hole on the top which connects to a line that runs up to the engine compartment and connects to the charcoal canister. 78 model tanks do not have this hole. So if emissions laws in your area require this, make sure you get the right one. If you get the tank with no hole, you will need a vented gas cap to relieve pressure in the tank. The other issue is the vent hose port. If you have a 78 the vent port is left of the filler hole, and just the opposite on the 79 models. Not a major issue but would require some modification to make it work if interchanged."

I've just went through the same thing, exactly. There is a separate post or a post in my build page that explains what I did with pics and etc..

Basically, I bought some different length bolts (4" and 6" I think) to replace the stock strap bolts and hold the bigger tank. But keep in mind this is only temporary solution for me as I have a parts truck 33 gal skid plate coming along sometime soonish. I've been running around semi DDing it like that for months, but no trail stuff.

Besides the old rusty bolts (I hosed them down 2 times a day with pb blaster for a week), the worst part was getting the filler tube situated on the fuel door end.

hope this helps, if you cant find my refs, let me know and I'll dig them up if needed.
