im gonna try to get around to putting my new 4.88's in my front end today. i have the ttb third member stripped, and have it bolted to my engine stand to make it easyer to work on. i havent done anything like this in years, and i wnat to get it right the first time.
once i have the pinion preload set right, as long as i have the right wear pattern on the teeth of the ring, i'm pretty much set right? if i have the corect pattern, then all my shimming must be correct right?
any tips on what to do or not to do from you guys?

my only real experiace with settin gup gears was with mercruser outdrives. but the shop i worked at had tons of spechlized tools that made setting everything up and measuring everything very easy. i'm gonna go ou ttomorrow and pick p a dial indicator and calipers to make the job easyer.
just looking for some tips, thanks guys.

Yep, you got it, If your pinion is preloaded, check your pattern and back lash.
If your pattern looks good, then the back lash is easy.
Metal expands when it gets hot, so don't try to set them up too tight.
Too lose and you will get a clunk when changing directions.
Stick it at the lower end, which is .008 I think, but not less.
