1. clean IAC assembly (motor and valve)
2. clean TB butterflies shaft and spring
3. make sure TB return spring functions properly
4. make sure the TB butterflies don't bind somewhere
5. make sure your throttle cable (the one linking the gas pedal to the TB) ain't binding either.

M.L.S.C makes a great point regarding IAC and TB, don't forget to replace the IAC gasket if needed and make sure all the TB cleaner has evaporated inside otherwise if you hook it up "wet" you could fry the solenoid attached.

It's also a good habit to "pull codes" first and see what indication you're getting. (search)

Once that's done you can IF necessary, re-set the "idle" by warming up the engine to normal operating temp, shut off and disconnect IAC then re-start motor. Using the TB idle stop screw set the idle using yor tach, re-connect IAC and drive it around so the PCM relearns the new idle setting. It should be noted that when using the TB idle stop screw, make a visual check where it's threaded at, use chaulk to mark it for reference and count the number of turns.

This is "touted" as a FOMOCO procedure by one of the members here who was a Ford mechanic, there are numerous threads if you need to double check. My idle is the best it's been doing it this way.

Good Luck ~ :thumbup
