mine from day one has pretty much always ran 25-30 psi hot @ idle and 50+ just off idle with 20w50 and a stock melling pump. After reading everything on HV pumps I decided to stick with a stocker.

a well machined engine and a well assembled engine should not need extra oil. plus it puts more strain on the dizzy gear.

I got 45 at cold idle.
60 reved up cold
20 hot idle
30-35 hot reved up.
I am disappointed.
what weight oil?
who built the engine?
was the bottom end balanced?
were the holes on the rods within specs or re honed?
crank turned and polished?

did they put in new cam bearings as well? but since everything was already done, you truely have no idea because it is just his word.

as for the holes in the crank, they only need to be rechamfered (how ever the heck it is spelled) if the crank it turned like .020 under.

I am talking about the big hole on the rod where the rod bearings go. They can get stretched out and become ovaled, thus causing oil pressure to bleed off.

if it is overfilled the oil can cavatate and loose pressure.

either way it is bad. How come you just didn't get a pan that was for the orginal vechile?

I tried. This was all I could find. I have put this thing together over a number of years with what I could get. The guy at the yard said that the van pan and the 4x4 pan were the same...but obviously not.
They could be. I just do not know, maybe someone else knows for sure.

I always guess you could have the wrong dipstick for the pan/engine?

but if that is the right pan for the engine, then 8-8.5 quarts in the stock pan is WAY too much oil.

if memory serves me right. These engines had always had issues with oiling. And ford had a TSB on this and it stated something psi @ 2000 rpms and forget about the idle psi.

I had a 351m. it had a total of 7 or 8 psi @ 5000 rpms. it had a slight knock. I tried to blow that thing up. Raf even remembers me in the morning doing hot laps around area 5 @ hollister. :toothless
