Is twice a year too much? I see it as cheap insurance as I go to school far away from home, and cannot afford to have a bearing failure as I never had one.

Same here. But I would say twice a year if you're not seeing a lot of mud or water is probably sufficient.

im replacing mine this week along with rotors,pads and calipers.

at 230,000 and the only part i had too replace was the pads(about every 5,000miles) rotors are still in spec

after this i will be doing it alot more like twice or more a year

ANY time you go through water deep enough to cover the tires you need to repack you bearings in the front. I would also say at least check them every 10,000 miles.
