I just got this 89 Bronco 5.8 XLT 78k Miles.
For some reason it feels like the OD is not engaging.
It seems like the truck never shifts into OD.
Is there a control wire from the tranny to engage or disengage over drive?
How do I check it?
Which transmission do I have ?

An 89 351 may have an E4OD, which IS an overdrive transmission, or it may have a C6 which is NOT an overdrive transmission.

Do you have an O/D OFF button on your dash? What's your shift pattern look like? Can you post a picture of your transmission?

How do you expect us to remote diagnose your truck with out you giving any actual useful information other then the year and engine?

89 probably is C6, I am guessing you also have a carb?

for OD on a 351W it is going to have a OD button on the end of the shifter, if not you do not have OD.

I just got this thing, so I don't have much information on it myself.
And no, it does not have a carb, its definitely fuel injected.
It does not have an OD button at the end on the shifter.
So I think this thing does not have OD. Gas mileage sucks:banghead

the carb engines stopped in 85 i believe. maybe 86. But you should have a c6. thats what i have in my 88. I think the e40d was introduced in 92. I could be wrong tho

From 1992+ the E4OD trucks had the shift button on the end of the shifter... earlier trucks with the E4OD had it on the dash.

85.5?/1986 was the first year for EFI on the 302's, the 351's got EFI later. The E4OD was introduced in 1989.

I was wrong. 88 the 5.8's got EFI. but the E4OD did not start till 90.

the 5.0's got the AOD, but the C6's were the auto in the 5.8's till 90.
I've read of a few cases now where 89's had E4ODs in them behind the 351's. Never behind the 302's though, pre-1992, the 302's always got AOD's... except for the early 80's ones and they were all C6's.
