I have dreamed of owning a 1984-1986 Ford Bronco 4x4 since I was a kid and fell in love with "Pepe, My lil Mule" off of the movie "Romance in the Stone" and then again with the tan 85 bronco off of Terminator II.

Well I am 31 now and finally got my hands on a 1985 bronco 4x4. It needs some work but the interior is in great shape, engine runs strong as does the transmission and the 4x4 works perfect. Only problems so far is holes in the exhaust manifolds and muffler, needs new carb and intake manifold and it needs new window motors on the rear window and the doors.

Here is a picture:

Has a few surface rust spots that can be taken off with sandpaper. Even the frame and engine area are clear of rust spots... It was used in the mountains here in New Mexico and was never parked in the snow, always garaged.

My plans are to put a 2 or 3 inch lift kit on it... maybe a 3 in the front and 1 in the rear so I can even it out some (It has a bulldog stance with its butt up a bit higher than the front).

I haven't decided if I want to go with a solid black/midnite blue paintjob with chrome brushguard/cattleguard and stepbars or dark tan paint with black brush/cattle guards and stepbars.

I do know that I want 10x15 gold/chrome modular rims that were used on my lil mule, pepe and 33x12.50 BFG All Terrain's on it.

I plan on putting some lights on top of it... 4 round ones in the middle and 2 rectangled ones next to them on both sides (example: -****- ) and 2 rectangled ones on the front cattleguard.

The only problem i'm running into now is I can't seem to find the rims. They don't seem to make them anymore. Cragar I think was the original manufacture of them. Even eBay is turning up nada on them.

I am unsure about 4x4's in general... a newbie you might say... like which is better, a body lift or a suspension lift? or why or how my Bronco is higher in the rear and lower in the front and how to even them out. Can you convert the locking hubs to automatic ones that can be turned on from within the vehicle?

And another good question... can the camper top on these broncos be painted to match the new paint color or do you have to buy them with the closest color match available?

All good questions and why I joined this forum.

I look forward to hearing what you guys have to say.

Hey there. Nice score to get a ride in that kind of shape. You can clearly see the potential.

I'll give you the quick answer to a few of your questions, but searching the forums will give a wealth of info.

Suspension. Body lift is ok in moderation, or for stretching out a massively tall ride, but body lifts break under extreme conditions, and don't actually give you any more clearance on the drivetrain.

For all your answers on lifts and tires, see the "Lift & Tire" Sticky Thread at the top of the 80-96 forums.

All broncos have a bit of rake, some more than others. New coils and springs may help a little, but most performance lift kits are option-able with varying degrees of lift to eliminate the rake.

Yes, but the majority of folks will tell you not to. Auto-hubs are weaker than manual, and prone to all sorts of problems. For the inconvenience, the manuals will serve you better. Most guys here have swapped their autos out at the first opportunity.

Yes, no problem, just prep it like any other fibreglass project. Some have even sanded out the rough texture of their tops to get a glassy shine that matches the body.
