This is weird, to me at least.

My experience with ignition interlock switches is that if you're not in park, neutral, or the switch is misalingned, no crank.

My '89, maybe a couple of times a year, will crank strong, but won't fire. But I found out that if I pull the shift lever up hard and back, it'll fire. That sounds like the interlock switch, but it doesn't either. I thought the interlock switch only intercepted the line to the starter relay. WTF is going on here?

More likely your ignition switch actuators are fatiguing/bending/wearing, and jacking with the shifter just moves them enough to get the switch into the right spot. I'd try realigning the ignition switch & lubing the actuators.
