Just pulled this thing while in process of trying to narrow down a strange overheating issue.

I've suspected its indicating incorrectly for a while, but now that I got it pulled, can someone confirm that the pointer is bent? Is it supposed to be 90* to the mounting surface?

It's from a 79 Bronco with a 400.

Also, as an aside, WTF is that little orifice below the pointer used for?

That other donglewopper standing next to the pointer? There's supposed to be some sorta plug thing in that hole??

I wouldn't suspect the angle of the pointer to affect the reading of the timing so greatly, or at least not enough for it to time that badly. Maybe as long as it's parallel to the face of the harmonic balancer...

That does look bent, but I don't know if it is supposed to be that way. I've also wondered what the hell that little round thing is for.
