Lincoln "door open" warning lights

Ripped these "door open" warning lights out of an 86 Lincoln Town Car;

Two wires need hooked up, a ground and a power. I just ran them through the rubber door to body grommet with a coat hangar to fish them through. It's easier if you pull the grommet out a bit at either end and then tuck it back after they're through.

After that I tapped into the dome light circuit right there, as you come into the vehicle, using the under dash lights at the kick panel.

The kick panels have to be removed and the grommets popped out a bit, but the door panels could just be left to hang, as you could cut the holes without removing the panels completely.

This was one of the cheapest, easiest and most satisfying mods I've done to the Bronco yet. Given the size of Bronco doors I think it adds some more safety to them for the side of the highway or trail, IMO.

(there's also a little blip on the luxury bling scale too)

Whadda y'all think ?! Gonna go rob a Lincoln today ?

Nice job Six, looks very good, almost factory. It got me thinking that it would be cool to recess some lights in the bottom of the door facing down. When the door opened the light would illuminate any crap you were about to step in. I know my g/f would like them because she is always a little squirmy about how to put her foot on the nerf bar. I think I've seen it on a luxury car, but I can't remember which one. BMW maybe?
my 94 had those stock in the door panels. im eliminating them from my new door panels along with the door handle recess and front storage pocket. the door panels had too much going on in my opinion. did add a 6x9 at the bottom though to help the 6.5's with the 150-500hz range.
good job though

Thanks Lookinfurfun & Dave

Might even save us gettin' the door torn right out of our hands by a passing car one day.

I was backing up a late 70s Ford truck on a farm years ago. Had the door open, and got it wiped right flat onto the front fender 180 degrees, by a huge round hay bale. Luckily it was a second job and Friday so I collected my cheque and split the scene, never to return !!!!!!!!!

Worse thing was my buddy, on the passenger side, had his door open too. The truck looked like Dumbo's ears would during a prostate exam. proving once again you should never drink where and while you work.

Dave that's a great idea.

I think I've seen that too. It kinda shines downward outta the bottom of the arm rest of said car right ? Can't remember which brand, but it's sounding awful Cadillac-like.

I think there are under rocker lights just for illuminating your step or step bar. Pretty sure someone here has done that too.

You're sure you don't want to cut a plexiglass panel into the bottom of the door and go neon now eh ?

Really ? Yours had em' stock ? You lucky last generation owners !!!!!!

The rest of us stiffs have to upgrade ! At least we don't have those bumper shocks to contend with.

Yeah 6X9s always sound good in truck doors. I nearly blew the door skins off my tiny old imported Dodge truck when I had those 4 way Pioneer 6X9s in them years ago. Sounded great !

Here's another couple of pics;

Not exactly rocket science, just you, your door panel and a carpet knife (and hopefully the correct measurements).

I buggered up and showed the later Lincoln light at the start. Forgive me as the big boss was away in Arube that week and junior was giving away parts, so i was on a yarding spree to beat the band. This is the 86 Lincoln light I actually used;

It's more round and the red illuminates much better.

Hmm, more ideas for Ryan :beer

I already put red reflectors on the side of the doors and the sides ofthe TG so it reflects on each side when folded down.
The bulbs in mine were burned out in my 93. I always thought they were reflectors until the first time I pulled a door panel. :duh Now if could just solve the mystery of the freakin map lights, I would be fully lit up.

This here's the problem;

That green wire is the culprit. The first time it rotted out it was at the hardest to get spot, in the holes behind the driver's seat belt retractor (just where Steve83 told me it would be).

It's an absolute beach to get to for repair, but I cut out the corroded wires, spliced in lengthened ones and used small wire nuts because I couldn't get in their with soldering tools, it's so tight.

I swore up and down if I ever had the truck apart I'd properely solder in and heat shrink extra length of wires (ground and black w/blue tracer{dome circuit} go in that spot too) there. This year I had that harness out and I done did it !!!!!!

Funny thing, that wasn't the problem this time. It was the male plug you see in the pic. It hangs downward inside the driver's kick panel. Because it hangs downward, water runs down and settles in the back of the plug and corrodes it absolutely green until the terminal rots off, like mine had.

I snagged another male plug outta the junkyard and there you see it soaking in baking soda to clean off the slight bit of green corrosion. Then I siliconed the back of it and injected dielectric grease into the front of the plug, like you see here;

Now, hopefully it won't happen again for a long, long while as I've just added some major interior lighting to help boost the interior light levels.

Check out the rest here;

It looks exactly like that too doesn't it? I wouldn't know as I've yet to see a last generation Bronco in a junkyard up here.

We were just talking, in another thread, about the later inner door skins and their more useful lower pockets. Are they seperate from the rest of the inner panel ?

Say, those don't look like stock 6X8 speakers you've got there. That's a good pic to illustrate those F'ing map light wires that corrode below the seat belt retractor. Would you send me that photo to use ?

why did you do all that :banghead
There is a reason why many people (meyself included) sell weatherpack connectors

Ryan

As these harnesses get older and older you can expect a knock on your door. I'd rather have had the ones in your pics than these things I was forced to use for those Chrysler dome lights I'm mounting in place of the rear seat ashtrays;

Can't believe you, of all people, haven't already got door panels lights. Glad to pay you back with the inspiration, I still owe you an awful pile of ideas to even it up though.

There ain't a whole lot of money in it, just time and TLC. If it wasn't an expensive mod and people here recommended it, the Bronco got it.

You can always throw mags, a bigger motor, soft top, etc at it when you've got more money and less time.

You find me a rust free 53-56 F-100 shortbox out there in Utah and we'll talk !

Six - here's a quick pic of the bottom portion of my door showing the pockets... they are a separate piece. If you rescue them from a junkyard you should be able to add them right to your doors... This is off an 89 XLT EB.

[/IMG]

Know I shouldn't do this, but when I went out this morning to grab the above pic the sunrise was awesome, so I'll inflict it on you guys...

That's even the same colour carpet ! I'll be robbing some newer Broncos on my next yard visit.

Way cool photo ! Downright spiritual ! There's your true Christmas present !

Sitting downtown between huge glass buildings yesterday about 4 pm and the dark, gray sky just opened a slit and it turned the whole downtown core yellow. The kind of weird yellow ski-doo goggles turn everything.

Beauty is right under ours noses if we'd bother to look.
