hey guys, i went down some backyard trails at a farm and hit a few 3 inch deep mud holes going pretty fast. nothing serious at all.. when i got done with the last hole i noticed my truck wouldnt shift into second. it shifts into reverse, park and 1 and it shifts from neutral to 1st perfectly. however it acts like it just wont shift.. and doent even try to shift out of first. ive tried going as fast as 1st gear would let me in hopes of it perhaps shifting to 3rd or 4th. NOTHING. i tried dissconecting my kickdown cable in case it was in a bind. i only dissconnected it at the throttle body. no difference. i also looked at the tranny to see of something was jamming any linkages. NOTHING. oil is clean and smells great. Bronco is at the tranny shop right now. just hopping u guys might have some ideas for me. thanks! :whiteflag oh yeah... 86 bronco.. (not the e4od)

Are you talking about the TV cable? That would be my first guess.
there is a cable that attaches to the throttle body that goes down to the tranny.. that is the cable i dissconnected.. i have no idea what its proper name is.. sorry guys. if it was here i would post a pic for u guys. thanks for responding tho! anybody else?
Yeah, that's the TV cable. Was it still attached to the TB? If that comes off and you drive for even a little while with it off you'll be rebuilding your trans.
yes it was attached.
is the cable attatched at the trans? that would be the second guess. i dont know what trans you got but it sounds like it is in limp mode.

ken
Vacuum Modulator?? Maybe it is gunked up..
so the general idea is that perhaps the tranny is not blown,, but rather has an outside type problem?

no limp mode in 86 that im aware off

should be c-6 tranny
He said AOD tranny so that would be N/A on the modulator valve. Are you sure it's AOD(OD on the shift selector)? Could it be a C-6 and you were checking the kickdown linkage? Even if that was the case it would still shift, the shift points would just be all screwed up.
Had a Cougar once that would do the exact same thing once in a great while when the linkage from the carb to the tranny would come off. As already stated, its not a kickdown, but a TV linkage and it tells the tranny what the throttle position is so it can shift accordingly. With it unhooked, the tranny "thinks" the engine is idling and absolutely will not shift out of first. If I was you, I would go thourogly check connections at both ends before the tranny shop tries to screw you over for the price of a rebuild!!
