I'm starting to see the disadvantages to tearing apart your DD, hard to run to Napa when your car-less, I'm stuck at home waiting on cut-off wheels :banghead

I had considered buying a beater DD, but I leave for basic training in 4-6 months so financially it doesnt make sense for me to, especially when I could dump the money in the Bronco :toothless

My Dana 60 is finally ready to go under the truck and weld on my radius arm mounts

I have one question for ya on this pic. This is a later model D60 as identified by the location of the pumpkin so far to the left. Where are you going to weld the radius arm mounts? I saw the arms in your earlier pic, what do the mounts look like?

Raleigh, The mounts Jim set me up with are the "weld-on" variety. But, since the center section is off-centered a little more drastically then the earlier models I will have to remove 2.5" of the center section (about .5" from the center of the leaf spring perch outwards) I will get pictures tomorrow of how much I remove. And hopefully the front end will sit on its on weight tomorrow or Monday :toothless

thanks, I am curious as I will be going to a D60 also and a local guy has one for sale for $300 but it is a later model and I don't want to go leaves.

In the end I will probably just keep looking for an older one so I can just use C bushing RAs.

You might consider buying the later model D60, you can cut off the center section a bit more then I did and run the stock style c bushings. It is the 8x170mm bolt pattern so your limited in options for rear axles, but the sterling is a great rear end. It has disk brakes stock, its easy to find, cheap, 35 spline axles on ALL models, and only about 3/4" less clearance then a 9"!

The only drawback i've found in the later model axles is the bolt pattern gives you limited options for wheels (I'm just going to get some hummer beadlocks recentered with the 8x170 pattern). And the Unit bearings can be costly to replace, besides that, for the price you can't beat'm.

My biggest problem is that I already have a D60 rear, picked it up for a great price and have already got it ready to go in, new brakes, bearings, seals and Yukon shafts.


The hunt continues!

Ahhh I see, good luck on the search then :beer

Little update, I got the passenger side shock hoop mounted, ended up having to trim the inner fenders/ac unit. I also got the center section trimmed up and the axle under the truck, hopefully have it centered front/rear and side/side and have the caster angle set tonight so I can start mocking up my radius arms.

So the axle is okay to do that to? It would make me think that it would be somewhat weaker.

I agree, it looks like a good 2" was taken off the center section. How far does the tube go into the cc? I would think one hard landing or pothole would bend that tube.

@ Zeus .. Yeah if that tube bends on the first good pot hole we are in real trouble with the long tube.
It does weaken the center section somewhat however the loads are transmitted through the radius arm mount right into the tube. That area is a very short section and very heavy wall Axel tube. And the tube is pressed a long way further into the center section.

:stupid

If I land hard enough to bend the short side axle tube, the long side axle tube would be fubar. If I do have any issues with bending, I can always truss the front end.

I'm still trying to find a deal on a 460 and transmission... heck I'd be happy to find a transmission to put behind my 302 at this point....

Were planning on a trip or two to TSF before I take off (I owe my dad a couple wheeling trips since his rigs in peices :toothless) so hurry up and get your junk together, it'd be cool to have you come along :beer

Well I got a little bit done today, got the rear end cleaned up and ready to go in, and the bump stops off my dad's rig and ready to go on mine and have the axle just about set up under the rig
