My computer's IE has contracted a filthy dose of "Spyware Quake"

neither AVG or Spybot seem to be able to rid it of this clap. Anyone got a patch/cure/link ?

Thanks in advance

check out AVG virus software. You can get the free version which is really nice, I run it on my laptop and it cleaned it up and keeps it that way.

If you were running Symantec like I suggested to about 50 people here for about the last 6 months, you would have never gotten infected. :goodfinge

I got that litteraly 3 or 4 weeks ago. I couldnt solve it so I did a reformat. Maybe you will be luckier.
The bitch of it is I've just reformatted !

Thought SpyBot had it but something keeps reverting my IE homepage to their spyware CRAP (they're the GD virus IMO).

Hopefully I can get rid of it with a few of the suggestions Pepe gave me, manI hope so my keyboard is starting to make me itch !'

I had a version a few years ago and I was never very impressed by it MyFullsize

In fact I found AVG better than that and Norton IMHO.

Easy fix...don't use IE. If you don't use IE, have a firewall, and are careful of your downloads you don't NEED an antivirus. I don't run one. Only time I ever got "bit" was when I tried opening a movie and it asked me to download a codec. Stupid me I didn't look to check where it was pointing me to for the codec, downloaded, error/spill over out of Media Player and I had to remove SpyFalcon from my computer. EAsy fix...don't fawkin use Media Player either.

Good advice Saurin

I have an excellent media player that came with my Soundblaster Audigy Platinum ZS. What media player do you use/recommend ?

BTW AVG is absolutely free and legal to use and download

Thats exactly what happened to me. A stupid codec. I use firefox and love it, its a lot more manageable and has a lot of really nice features IE dosnt and its safer (from what I hear). I got firefox after the first time I reformated and havent looked back since.

Firefox browser
AVG Antivirus
Spyware Blaster

Using the firefox / AVG / Spyware Blaster combo, I've not been infected at all in the last two years.

My daughter uses IE, but I have the latest AVG and Spyware Blaster updates on her computer every week. She's a typical teen and goes EVERYWHERE on the net, but has only been infected once in two years.

Get a personal firewall or some other NAT device...cuts out 95% of the crap you would have to deal with. We have a router with NAT at the house.

Firefox is definately a good one. Though, as it rises in popularity (About 1 in 12 users that visit this site uses it I think according to Joe) it may end up finding its doom.

For the absolute highest protection, just use Linux. I can't use it cause my internet in the dormitories is wireless and wireless cards and Linux don't really cooperate yet all that well, though in future kernel's this will be alleviated.

I know AVG is free. It's not bad either. I have Spysweeper for keeping my cache and temp directories clean periodically of certain cookies, and otherwise with a bit of brains and diligence I don't worry.

Once I am in a position to have internet access via ethernet hardline I will be moving on to Linux and keep Windows only for gaming and activities I have no other choice on. WHY should we have to buy program to protect our operating system? It should be able to protect itself. Windows is ass backwards on alot of things, and I've had enough. But..its got me by the balls on the wireless issue.

Oh yeah, I use Zonelabs firewall, forgot to mention that. Windows firewall works as well, but I don't trust somethign that EVERY computer has, it makes it that much more likely to be attacked. Lower numbers of usersmeans a smaller attack base which makes you less "valuable" to attack. With the firewall you don't have to worry so much about programs accessing the internet to download more code or to communicate your information.

I got Symantec, the newest version, with the latest updates.... A few years and a product can improve a lot. A few years ago, there was no really great anti-v software.

Ive enjoyed beeing v free for 4 months, and not only that, it cleaned me of 2 dozen ****ers that would not get cleaned with anything else.

Give it another shot... Its the *only* one I rate 5 out of 5 stars.

But geez louise... you gotta part with a few $$$ to get it. Nevermind, everyone wants free software that performs like professional software. :)
