Need Advice: Added Custom Bumper - Now Running Warm on Climbs

316 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  miesk5
Forum,

Need your help on my after I added a heavy but cool TrailReady bumper to my Bronco.

Water temp usually always held in the "O" of the N-O-R-M-A-L range even on climbs. But since adding the bumper I push R and even into the M range on extended climbs, I live outside the Cascades.

I believe nothing is wrong with the thermostat. I thought of flushing the radiator, but since it may be original I have thought of just replacing.

In your opinion, what's the best solution to get the temp back down? (I'd like to keep the bumper.)

The first thing I would do is get a real temperature gauge with numbers so you know what the actual temperature is. The pictures I've seen of the Trail Ready bumpers on other rigs (hint hint - we like pictures) don't really block the radiator, so I'm not sure how this would negatively affect your cooling. If it is the stock radiator, it could also be partially plugged both inside and out after 28 years. And with the recent heat wave we've been having, that could definitely affect engine cooling.

Yo 93xlt-keepontruckin,

As fflcfreak advised.
Temperature Gauge Installation , mounted in coin holder in a 93 @ Gauge install, a little different...... by Dustin J (SOLD, rokhrse, sukngas) at Gauge install, a little different......

Coolant Temperature Gauge
Check gauge calibration as follows:
  • Using a Rotunda Instrument Gauge System Tester 014-R1063 or equivalent, with the key in the OFF position, disconnect wiring connector at the sender and connect tester to wiring connector.
  • Set the tester to 74 ohms.
  • Turn the key to RUN, and wait 60 seconds. The gauge should indicate on the COLD graduation.
  • Set the tester to 9.7 ohms and wait 60 seconds. The gauge should indicate on the HOT graduation.
  • If engine coolant temperature gauge tests within calibration, replace engine coolant temperature sender.
  • If engine coolant temperature gauge still tests out of calibration, replace coolant temperature gauge.
