I just bought a 460 complete with transmission everything running and working. It is a 1977 model so it's got the crappy smog heads.

I've also got at my disposal a 1986(or close to it) 351 H.O. complete running with transmission.

I am building my 1965 galaxie (yeah it's not a bronco, but I'm happy with my bronco the way it is). What's the cheapest route to go here for getting a fairly impressive engine in my galaxie. I'm not looking for a demon, just something that'll push you back in the seat enough to sell it. Most of my restoration experience has been with stock drivetrains, so I don't know which of these would be cheaper to build to get the most power.

It would seem that the 460 would be my best choice since it's got more displacement, but I figured I'd ask yall you're opinions on it. I just made another post about the 460 heads, but any info I could get about them would be welcome as well.

well, a 390 might be my best bet, but since I've already got these 2 engines and both are totally build-able i can't see buying another one... Unless you've got a built 390 you'll trade me for both of these:toothless

it's going to take a lot of HP to make that heavy galaxie really sit you back much on acceleration... the 351HO still has shitty e7 heads so it's only going to make maybe 215horsepower... i'd rule that out. that 460 is going to make about the same power with it's shitty heads and low compression, maybe a tiny bit more torque...

IMO what i'd do is put in the 460, put a set of small chamber aftermarket heads on it, that way you can have good breathing and high compression both. and put a decent mild cam in there to compliment it. (something in the 1500 - 5500 range if you're running an auto with stock stall, maybe a little more aggressive if you're running a high stall, or stick shift). you could leave the bottom end of the 460 stock. expect 450+ horsepower if you do this option.. much, much better than either of the other options since it's over twice the power.

I have no idea what the housing is... It's mated to a C6 transmission now. I can't afford to drop 1200-1500 dollars on a set of heads right now, so all those fancy ones are out of the question. That money would be better spent elsewhere. I have the D3VE heads on it, so I'm thinking putting some flat or domed pistons in would increase my compression a little, and there is an awesome machine shop here that I'm sure will do my porting on the cheap.

I think replacing pistons and porting the heads on the 460 sounds like that might bet me where I want to be, maybe a cam and intake, but for now what do you guys think about pistons and porting on my existing d3ve heads?

how can you have no idea what the trans is? what engine is bolted to it right now, big or small? if there is no engine, measure and compare to the engines you have.

dome pistons and port work on your existing heads would get you good power too, but if you're bottom end is good right now, i think it would cost more than just a pair of off the shelf heads with small chambers.

maybe we're having mis-communication here... It is a C6 transmission, I don't think automatics have bell housings... at least not what I call a bell housing. I call a bell housing something that goes on a manual transmission that is removable.

I thought all factory 460's were big blocks? am I wrong there?

I'm not sure I understand the question is all.

I've got D3VE heads, and a D0VE intake on it.

351w and 460 use different bell housings.

and the C6 does not have a removable bell housing, nor is there a adaptor for small to big bell patterns.

oh, now I see where the miscommunication is...

Both my 460 and my 351H.O. have transmissions bolted on them. so no need to swap anything between the two...:thumbup

They both have the same type of bellhousing.

There's no need to do a lot of this. You could easily get good power with just the timing chain and cam swap. If you're going to be selling it immediately, that's all I'd do.
