I even tried searching. What is 56K warning? See it pop in the threads often. Like the pirate with a steering wheel stuck down his pants said - Ahrrrr.. it's driven' me nuts!

Once upon a time, there was dial-up internet, where users used a modem to connect to the web. Most people do not have that type of connection anymore, but rather they have faster digital cable or DSL. It's just a heads up for a bandwidth intensive thread for those still running 56k or "Dial-up".

you know just the other day I google 56k to see what it meant. I felt like a fool too.
I remember jumping for joy when they came out with those blazing fast 14400 modems. :shocked

14,400? I remember when 300 baud modems were the norm and 1200 baud modems were $1,500.00. Then I remember *finally* getting a 2400 baud modem when the 9600s came out and they were once again out of price reach. The change from 9600 to 14,400 was just a flash update to my US Robotics modem. Remember those?

Remember how HUGE some of those damn modems were? Plus they were connected by serial cable, IIRC, and the numbers were always long-distance, so you were paying out the wazoo for every minute you were on what was basically a text-only internet.
I remember getting a 28.8k and thinking, "wow, this is gonna be sooo fast!!" :rofl:

Hahahah now how many of you geeks remember going on the BBS's back int he day. I'll never forget my Zoom 2400 external modem..went from that to a US Robotics Sportster 28.8 and I thought I was god w/ that thing. Now the cable is even too slow for my impatient ass.
Yes, I remember those days also. I also remember pay over $400 for a Meg of RAM and having the wife throw it away, because it felt like an empty box. :shocked

I was pretty young when 14400 was released, but I was old enough to download pics from playboy.com It's crazy to think about the text only internet, you had to download the picture then open it to see what you got. My dad had a US Robotics 14400 provided by his employer so he could work from home. It got toasted in a lightning storm so they sent him a new one. I don't remember the exact price on the packing list but I remember it was really [email protected] expensive.

I'm not as old as some of you guys (22), but I remember having a 33600 modem and how fast it was. Later, I remember having a video card on the pentium 100 and having 8mb of video memory, which I thought was tits at the time!
Some fun old games and internet experiences from back then though!

My town was one of the first three to get internet access in our state (NE). I had a buddy that conned his boss into upgrading his computer for work and letting him have his old one. He calls me over and says, "You gotta see this" He got onto a BBS and started to download a porn pic. 10 min later, it's about 1/5 done. We go out to his garage and BS and get a beer. Go back in to check and it's about 1/3 done. Go have another beer... Anyway, the nekid girlie finally gets loaded and I thought it was the COOLEST thing I EVER saw! The town even had a town hall meeting for the public to teach them about the World Wide Web when we got access. It was all text at that time. I remember feeling excited about the future and where it might all lead to. wow.

Apple IIe, 128k mem DUAL 5.25 floppys (WHOA!) 5 Meg Hard Drive, Kicking monochrome monitor (green) and a 300 baud card modem! ...And I was on all the cool BBSs swapin' warez... I remember leaving it connected all night do download 1024k worth of games...
Damn I feel old now.

Hmmm.... I can remember taking the first computer class offered at my high school and only having 2 computers for the whole class. I spent many nights down at the local Radio Shack doing class projects on the floor model TRS80. The sales guy were so surprised that someone actually knew how to use the thing that they kept sending customers over to me to try and help sell the things.

Fish, I'm the same way. Learned to program in Basic, lotta good that does me now. We just got wireless internet out here in the boonies last year, so that 56K warning always scared me off when i had to use the telephone line for internet. Don't even have the phone line anymore. JSM84
