Overhead Console Acting Up

26252 Views 38 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Cjbowhunter
The OHC on my '94 EB FSB is rapidly flashing what I
perceive is an error msg rather than displaying the info
it was designed to (temp, direction etc).
Adjusting the display brightness with the headlight switch
used to correct this but no longer has any effect.

A) Can the unit be easily repaired?
B) Are the parts readily available and reasonably priced?
C) Should I just replace it with one from the U-Pull ?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

yo,

What is the error message?

Temperature Display Outside Overview; for all Ford Overhead Consoles in 94-96
Source: by Ford via Steve83 (Steve, That dirty old truck) at SuperMotors.net

Temperature Sensor for Bronco overhead consoles. Temperature Display The temperature display operates through the use of a thermometer sensor (15A022) mounted behind the front bumper/grille. The display can be changed from English to metric units. The data from the temperature sensor must be processed and adjusted so that engine heat does not affect the displayed temperature. When the ignition is first turned on, the module checks to see if the ignition has been off for more than two hours. If it has, the currently sensed temperature is displayed. If the ignition has not been off for two hours and the sensed temperature is higher than it was when the vehicle was turned off, the old temperature will be displayed. If the ignition has not been off for two hours and the sensed temperature is lower than it was when the vehicle was turned off, the currently sensed temperature is displayed.
To update the temperature, the module looks at several different factors, as listed below.
Engine Cold
If ignition has been on for less than five minutes, and was previously off for longer than two hours, the engine is cold and does not affect the temperature sensor. Therefore, the current sensor data is used.
Engine Warm, Updated Temperature Cooler
If ignition has been on for longer than five minutes or if the ignition was off for less than two hours, the engine compartment may be warm from the heat of the engine. The current sensor data is used only if it is less than the stored temperature reading from before. Engine Warm, Updated Temperature Warmer If the sensor data indicates a higher temperature, the module looks at the vehicle speed to determine whether engine heat is causing erroneous readings. A "high speed counter" is used to determine this. The counter is incremented when the speed is greater than 53 km/h (33 mph) and decremented when the speed is between 16-53 km/h (10-33 mph). If the speed is less than 16 km/h (10 mph), the counter is reset, and the displayed temperature is not updated from its last reading. If the counter is greater than two minutes, the currently sensed temperature is displayed. If the high-speed counter has counted less than two minutes, the temperature is allowed to increase only one degree per minute. If the temperature sensor is short- or open-circuited, the display will read SC or OC, respectively, instead of a temperature. If the temperature drops below 3.3C (38F) or is below 3.3C (38F) upon power-up, the display will alternate between displaying "ICE" and the temperature. The display will alternate every two seconds for a time of one minute..."

OverHead Console wiring for 96 Bronco

LG/Y also feeds the dual sun visor vanity mirror lights. The other wire in this harness is Bk/Pk (reverse lights) which cancels dimming in the electrochromic RV mirror.

Is it giving an error or is the display just going in and out constantly?

Could be a loose/broken solder on the printed circuit board. It can be replaced.

I saw a guy selling a NOS Bronco OHC display for $100 ebay.

The ones out of explorers also work nicely in these, the green on the display is slightly different though. You can find them on ebay or in a junkyard. I just sold the last one I had last week, but I'm sure I'll be coming across another.
My problem is a little different for my OHC on my 96 EB FSB. The compass, temp gauge, and lights all work fine. The problem is that the map lights will not turn on when you push the "lamp" buttons. The lights both turn on fine when you use the dash light switch. I was going to just take it down and explore the problem but thought I would ask you guys first.

Thanks Miesk5. Maybe all that electronic training I got long ago will come in handy to decipher the schematic.

At least you wont need to pay someone $$$ to do it for you.

I see that a lot of stuff goes thru that damn Module... hopefully it's just a connector/wiring/socket or lamp issue.

keep in touch!
miesk5, Are you still looking for the trim panel retainers you mentioned on another forum? I have found the holy grail I have been working on all week

There are two possible temp sensors and that is the style I most commonly find on explorers and they don't work on Broncos w/o splicing in the explorer style plug end.

The one I have seen on Broncos most often is flat instead of having a pointed end. I can take a pic of them side by side if anyone is interested.

Steve83 also has some pics of the Bronco style sensor in his albums.
I'm bored so here you go:

Three on the left are the style I find on Broncos and the one on the right is what I find on explorers....but I'll note that I've found both styles on explorers.

So Justin, where can I find the flat Bronco style sender? Rock Auto has the one Miesk5 mentioned, but it is meant for the other connector I believe.
Have you confirmed that it is indeed the style you need? Its located the driver side front frame rail by the bumper. I've never seen another style on a Bronco, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

I've not been able to locate them for sale anywhere new. When I come across them in the yards, I usually just cut them off and add them to the collection. I might be talked into letting one go from my stash. :haha Send me a PM if you're interested.

You can also convert it to the more common explorer style plug/sensor (which is actually what I've done) and that works too.
My sender was MIA when I got the truck 6 months ago, but it has the older style plug. PM en route......

BUT; when I come across these hard-to-find or too costly connectors; I make my own using appropriate crimp-on quick-disconnects or splice connectors and 3M black weatherstrip Adhesive to seal and di-electric grease

Trucky did same when he used da Explorer sensor http://fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11670

Good info Miesk. I've never been able to find the Bronco style sensor new. I've even went to Ford with sensor in hand and the guys couldn't come up with anything for me in the system.

So for anyone else needing a sensor, either convert to the explorer style sensor (which works just fine and is what I did) or hit the junkyards and carry your pocketknife or wire cutters.
