Hi Team,

So the previous owner painted the truck including the hard top to match the body. The original color was black/gray combo with the black hard top.

Does anyone have any pointers on removing the paint on the hard top and try and preserve that orange peel texture? I'm afraid to use any type of solvents and melt the dam thing.

Unless I sand it down and re-texturize somehow?

Thanks everyone

You could probably sand it down and use Bed liner in it.
I thought about that. Just worried about the fading after a few years. Unless they are less prone to doing that nowadays I would rather go with a painted top. I know they make sprays that add texture and then I can probably just paint over that.

I will attach a link to my topper repaint job. I used a sandblaster to clean mine up and repaint. The texture remained and it looks like a factory new top now.

I need to repaint my top as well. It has never been refinished, and most of the paint on top has faded away. I think I'm going to try Wet Edge fiberglass primer and paint. They make a flat black, and it can be applied with a roller. I'm thinking a heavy nap roller would give it the original textured look. Either that, or doing a final coat with an airless sprayer turned down to give a bit of splatter. Like most, I want to keep the original textured look.

I'm new in this blog, I don't know if I can put a Craigslist link, I was texting today with a local guy who is planning to sell a top (white) from his Bronco ('88 bricknose), he said he needs to remove it and wash it, it has some green mildew but it looks solid. We are in NC, Raleigh area. I'm planning to visit him this Saturday to see some parts from that Bronco who will be in it's way to the junkyard soon (as per the owner). I can ask him or give him your user name. I know is far from CA but you may know some trucker who can bring it to you.

Yes, he's selling the whole truck for $800. I don't know if he has the title. Check Craigslist, Raleigh NC area. I don't have a space to store it, if I could, I'd buy it for parts.

Citri Strip is what I would use if sand or media blasting was not an option.
That stuff took my bedliner up in short order.
Just brush on and cover with plastic over night. Peels right off and smells nice too.

I did check the craigslist ad and it states that he doesn't have a title. Being in the rust belt I tend to cringe when I see solid broncos being junked over no titles.

I don't see any major signs of rust in the ad but with the tailgate off and the driver window down it may have soaked up alot of water. The winshield is also busted.

I'd you do go look at it, and don't want the tailgaten let me know if its solid. I'm always up for a road trip for bronco parts and I was thinking about heading Greensboro this weekend anyway.

I asked him about the tailgate, he said that is rusted at the bottom, and the only thing that it could be good is the glass.

A spare rear window is good thing to have if you can store it. Never know when you may need it.

Monstaliner bed liner is uv resistant has an awesome texture and comes in a bunch of different colors. I did the roll on application for my cargo area and love it. 3 years and still looks like the day I did it...

*sidenote... If it gets damp when it's drying it'll have a matte satin finish instead of a semi gloss finish. You can see how the colors are different on the tailgate around the edge.

Get one of those cheap DA Sanders off of Amazon, some 180 grit sandpaper discs, and a cheap respirator and go to work on it, you'll have it sanded down smooth in a couple of hours
