we have placed the tie rod and upper and lowers joints and i was just wondering why there is so much play in the steering? what are my options? i have talked with a friend near by that has a 96 bronco also and he says the steering is tight and rides good. we had this same problem even before the lift. what are my options?

What year is your truck?

get a friend to move the steering wheel back and forth while you watch under the truck to see where the play is.

could be just a worn out steering gearbox

How many miles? You mention a lift, did you pull the front axles and rebush them on the crossmember? These trucks react worse to loose components than most vehichles. You may just need to rebuild the front end. common areas of concern to look at are:
Steering box (good for about 120-140,000)
Steering shaft, both the rag joint and the slip joint in the shaft itself
Tie rod ends
Ball joints
bushings in the axle and the trailing arms at the frame
COuld even be something like bad/loose wheel bearings.
Some people have complained of rivits coming out of the frame at the
crossmember by the steering box also
