i have a 1989 5.8
when i got the truck it needed a new alt
i put a high output one in
the truck had a lot of extra wires in it,(a plow ,overhead lights,cb) the wiring was a mess
i got rid of the mess ,the truck was running fine with the new alt
now the battery light has come on
it still runs and starts fine, but
the map lights wont work unless the headlights are on
the ampreg goes down from 14 volts to 12 when i put the heat on
and the needle moves when i use the power windows
but the truck runs fine
whats the deal

Put a volt meter on it and have somebody use these items while you read the meter. This will tell you what the alt is doing exactly. It is possible to have a bad alt even new out of the box.

Especially if you bought a re-man from AutoZone.
