This is the company I worked for in SoCal, Hadley Auto Transport. Nice find. And the ones with Convoy, they were bought by Ryder and then Allied. Allied was once the largest Carhaul company in the US. They are no longer in business. Thanks again.

We had a terminal manager in Rhode Island that worked for Anchor Transport in upstate New York as a driver for years. I believe New Car bought them and neither are around now.

Yes, they were just a basic raised bunk behind the driver called "coffin sleepers".

"In the old days, a coffin sleeper was one that was 24" wide and approx. 36" tall. It was mounted behind the cab of the truck and level with the top of the cab. There was no access from the cab directly. You had to climb up into it thru a door in the side, located on the passenger side end.
You had no way to communicate with the driver while you were in the sleeper and he couldn't tell you when he was going to jump when the brakes failed going down a 6% grade, on a two lane road, in western states in the 50"s."

It's more visible in this pic:

Take the bottom last stepside truck, and make it black with chrome like the one above it, and you have the old 64 Chevy my dad used to have. Would have made one serious street machine.

This is pretty close to the 64 my pops had, though I only ever knew it parked at the end of the driveway, rusting and sinking into the ground. His had the non-spare tire fender like this one. Same chrome on the b-pillars.

I think I would be better of sleeping in one of the cars. Than sleeping in the coffin sleeper. My claustrophobia would take over I would have had to been drugged. LOL

For God's sake, Take cover!

The 8th of June, 1966. A day that Topekans know very well. Just before 7pm a tornado formed 8 miles out of town. Bill Kurtis' now famous words could be heard on nearly every radio and t.v. in town. The tornado jumped Burnett's mound, which was supposed to stop it according to Native legend. It laid down a 22 mile path of destruction, half a mile wide through all of Topeka, killing 16 in its way. The F5 tornado is still the seventh most costly tornado in US history. For 34 minutes it ravaged the town, destroying 800+ houses and damaging 3000 more. Nearly 3000 businesses were destroyed or damaged. My dad recalls an Elvis Presley record, lodged 4" into a tree.

From June 3rd to June 12th we had 57 confirmed tornadoes in the Great Plains.

Awesome pics Blue ( as always ); I'm a big Bill Kurtis fan by the way. No one can do documentaries like him. That said, I know we discussed the living "there vs here", tell you what: you can't get me away from the ocean and I will take 10 hurricanes to one of those damn tornados you flat landers get, any day of the week. God bless you guys....
