Actually you DO have to go out and lock them yourselves, but thats the good part. You know they are locked all the time when you turn the knob. With auto's you dont have that peace of mind. They are very failure prone (mostly due to lack of maintenance) but they are also a bad design in the first place for anyone that wheels their rig.

2nd, don't listen to anyone who cant back up their statements with facts and knowledge. "They just are" is a horrible excuse to do anything, and while your friend may have been correct this time...even a blind dog finds a bone every now and then.

They are about 70-80 bucks.

i know the uppity Broncos came with auto lockers installed from the factory. You have a D44-TTB in your truck right now. It's what your front axle is, those other numbers are just different sizes of axles, i *think* the D35 is a jeep axle and the D60 is a Chevy Axle.

Auto-lockers fail when you need them most, or when you least expect it. You'll run into a situation where you're driving down the highway and the right front auto-locker fails and tries to lock the tire, giving enormous pull in the wheel and making the truck near undriveable. Or you'll shift into 4 hi to start wheeling and it won't lock, which creates many more issues. Just about no one maintains them correctly, and even if they do, they're still prone to fail.

You do have to get out and lock the hubs, but they will lock and unlock when they are supposed to. There are other options to Warn, but i have had the best luck and longevity out of my Warn Premiums with their lifetime warranty.

Warns have went up in price, the cheapest place for warn premium hubs is Jeffs bronco graveyard.

They are $93 shipped. like 86 or so before shipping.

OK, story time.

For the longest time my auto hubs were working. I could get one of them to click when i turned the drive shaft. At a buddy's property I got all four tires to spin in the mud. Anyway It was raining and I was out riding around on dirt roads. I figured I'd give this clay road a run. It had a slight hill to it, but it was so little you could barely tell. Anyway I got almost to the top of the road and notice my front hubs were not locking and just the back tires were spinning. I figured I'd just back down the muddy road. Well it had a very slight grade to it for the water to run off. As i backed up I kept sliding down toward the ditch. I gave up after sitting right on the edge of ditch just spinning in the clay mud.

Had to give ogeechee4x4 a call to come and pull me off a public dirt road, that was maintained by the city. Pretty sad indeed. Oh before ogeechee got there a guy from work stopped and wanted to pull me out. So in the end i got pulled out by a pretty nice extended cab k1500.

Auto hub lockouts are dangerous. They have the tendency to stop working when you need them to and there is never any positive engagement when you are out on the trail. As for brand pretty much any brand of hub lockouts will work just fine in place of the autos, so donn't have your heart set on warns because of the name. For the longest time I had Superwinch premimums on my truck and switched to warn premiums because I got them for cheap. To be honest I liked the superwinches much better.

I have learned to like my automatic hubs for light duty on a stock truck. I like not having to get out of the truck when its -20. When my automatics go they will be replaced with manuals.
IMO if you are stock and your autos are working fine then stick with them.

if this were an expensive modification, then i *might* tend to agree with your argument. however, at under $100, the only excuse for not going to manual hubs is either ignorance, laziness and/or just being a really cheap sob who lets everything go until it breaks, leaving you stranded and wishing you had listened to the more experienced folks at fsb who have already been there and done that.

I second you on the Superwinch hubs....I really liked the set I used to have on my '68. Better than the Warn premiums I have now in my opinion.

I like my Superwinch hubs until it comes to taking them back off. If you don't use antiseize the allen bolts have a taper to them and WILL get stuck. I've had to use a cut off wheel to get one of my lockouts off.

Autohubs will fail you when you need them most. Replace them if you plan on using 4x4 ever.

Warn premiums have been the best $100 I've ever spent on my bronco. The drivers side auto was stuck just enough to keep the left axle turning during regular driving, but weak enough to skip when I needed it to stay locked. The sound is unmistakeable.
IMO, autos suck for even the mildest daily drivers. My mileage has improved, and I have NOT seen the increased tire wear the Ford service guy swore would happen.

Manual hubs are a big improvement over auto hubs! But IMO warn, MM, Superwinch, newer spicers....etc.... are all about the same and all are external driven. So I would buy whatever is cheapest. If you want a good set of manual hubs find a set of spicers off a 70's d44. Alot better than any of the aftermarket crap!!! Thats my 2 cents. Good luck.
