Im getting a new tailgate which has heated rear window, mine is currently a heated rear window also.

Can I just splice the wiring together instead of having to pull the whole heater assembly wiring out of the old truck? Or do I need to keep it in tact?

You could but the connector is only behind the rear bumper, comes up under the left tail light, its easy to pull - I just did it when I painted my Bronco.
