Retainer bolt that holds harmonic balancer on. I can't wedge anything in there to stop crankshaft from moving and don't have impact wrench (heard not to use one anyways)

why not? an impact is THE BEST thing you could possibly use to break that bolt loose.
whoever told you that is retarded.

It said that on the harmonic balancer kit I rented from auto zone. Got it off using the bump start method. New balancer is in place. Just gotta go get torque wrench to lock new one in. Anyone know what its supposed to be tightened to ?? My haynes Manuel hasn't arrived yet

just snug it down and call it good. like i mean snug it down.
give the breaker bar a good jerk motion. so you spin the engine just a little bit. you need impact force to get the torque applied, as an applied force will only turn the engine.

Ok balancer is on and snug but now there's a loud ticking sound. From around pass side manifold. Never heard it before

Just drill a couple holes in a short piece of 3/16" to 1/4" thick steel and slip
3/8" bolts through the holes in the balancer and through the tool you made
from scrap steel.
BTW, never use a file for a pry bar!

That one's crystal pattern was changed, a clue is the holes drilled through it.
That's a normalized file I'd bent "back" to make a knife out of but never did.

Yes, the breaker bar trick. i was referring to the person who told the OP to not use the impact gun to remove the bolt.

hard to tell without a sound clip. feel around and try and find air escaping.
if the manifolds are stock, there won't be any gaskets.
headers will have gaskets most likely.

I'll get a sound clip by tomorrow somehow, too late to fire up the beast. Manifolds are stock so ill feel where air is.coming from cause there was def more exhaust smell from under hood than before

Forget the sound clip, just get in there and find the source.
At night with a good flashlight works good for stuff like this.
