Here's the deal: hard up shifting (especially 1-2) and code 628 (torque converter slipping). Assuming it is just the TC that's bad, what's the vote here, replace just that or put in a whole new tranny (rebuilt/reman). The rig (95 w/ 5.0) has 174K, always shifted smooth until this. Tranny doesn't leak oil, fluid looks good. I don't know how much longer I will keep, hopefully about 1-2 years.

Also, is it feasible to replace the rear oil seal when the tranny is out or do you need to disassemble the engine to do that. It's dripping a bit back there but not horribly.

Thanks,
Biederboat

I'd check out your MLPS...

That going bad can cause all kinds of wild symptoms.

MLPS a.k.a Manual Lever Position Sensor

It is on the transmission. Just do some searching for MLPS, you should find plenty of info. You still will want to change all the fluids in the the transmission, since you are not sure if it has ever been changed.

First thing I do when I get a used vehicle is change all of the fluids.

P.S. Yes, get a Haynes manual.
