Saginaw pump swap question

1715 Views 13 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  muddybronco
Well, two questions. This is for my 95 w/ a 302.

1) Wondering if anyone knew a part number for the required, longer serp belt on a 95 302?

2) As I understand it, 300's and 302's have a PSPS that needs to be spliced in during the swap. That or get a Sag from a donor that had a 300 or 302 and it will come with a PSPS.
The Sag I've got has a PSPS but my Bronco's old C2 pump does not. Any thoughts as to why my 302 doesn't have one? (aside from the pump not being original)

Thanks.

my 89 used the same belt....if it wont work, I think you just get a belt for a 351
no idea, but i can check out the wiring diagrams for it on monday

if you are not taking a switch out and disconecting it during the swap, i wouldnt worry about it.
just let the sags senser hang, it "shouldnt" cause a problem.

not to many people have done it to the newer ones.
I believe Raf posted his part # for his 95 351 in my saginaw pumps for sale post.
to tight on the belt is also not a good thing, wears the bearings on all the accersories...

That's my thought too.

Yep. I wasn't going to try to re-use my old belt.
I'm not doing the swap right this second anyway. Just trying to gather any info on the belt ahead of time so I can do it w/out having to run up to the parts store.
Thanks.

If I understand correctly, my 95, speed density 302 w/ a manual tranny should have a PSPS, yes?
It doesn't.
I guess I just have a 351 and don't know it. (yeah right) :)

3 ways to tell a 302 vs a 351
EGR
302 EGR is fed exhaust from the lower intake
351 EGR is fed exhaust from the exhaust manifold
Fuel rail / intake width
302 fuel rail is ~1/2" from the upper intake
351 fuel rail is ~1.5" from the upper intake
Vin
302 vin has an engine code of N
351 vin has an engine code of H

check the vin maybe a previous owner swaped in a 302, you poor bastard if thats the case. If you want to check to see if a pvevious owner removed the PSPS connector from the harness, pull the computer plug and check if there is a wire in slot 24

The only difference between a PSPS equipt vehicel and one without is the high pressure hose, computer and 1 extra connector in the harness.

Worse case senereo is you are suposed to have one and you don't now. you can live without it. :thumbup

Most of the belt part numbers will be the number of ribs and the length of the belt in inches. So, a 6V565 belt would be 6 ribs, 56.5" long.

Crossreference the belt listing until you find a manufacturer that lists it this way. Then add a bit to the belt length. I think 2" is the magic number.... but in all honesty, I don't remember changing the belt when I changed pumps.

Aha... here goes (90 302):

Kelly Springfield: 915K6 (91.5" long)
Gatorback: 4060915

I'd double-check those part numbers for your model year, but you can see how they "code" them.
the 94 ons i think use a different belt routing, and a different belt, as the eblt off my 92 351 would no where fit zillas 95...
yeah, they added a second idler pully between the smog pump and Alt in the 92-96 years

ya, but there are some oddballs.
people also said all 92's have a different style alt mount thant pre 91's, well, mine has a 91 style alt mount, and belt routing.
On my 94 with a 302 and A/C I used a 102 inch belt. I went down to the auto parts store had them look up a stick belt and then asked them for a belt 2 inches longer, and 102 is what they gave me.

dont forget the 1/2" step up between the dizzy hold down and the intake gasket... thats my favorite
the stock belt on my 93 351 is 102". i think 93 was the changeover year when they added the idler pulley because according to the FORD computer i needed the old style tensioner and idler but they then gave me stuff for a 94 and it was what i had originally. is it common knowledge that 96's don't have smog pumps? Steve83's 96 parts truck in memphis doesn't have one at all! :thumbup
