Shocks

Hey Team, I am getting ready to put new tires and wheels on my 1989 Eddie bauer bronco. Does anyone have new shock recommendations? Brand? Size? I would like to do front and back. All round driving.

Thank you
Bix

The largest model number Bilsteins you can afford. I.E. 5100's, 7100's, 9100's etc.

i'm gonna do like @miesk5 and start a word document collection of responses to commonly asked questions to save myself the effort of typing. just kidding, i'm not that motivated and there can be only one!

start with this and go from there:
monotubes > twin tubes

Ive run the following with success:

KYB Excel-G
Rancho RS5000
Skyjacker Nitro
ProComp ES3000
Skyjacker M95
Bilstein 5100

I have the M95s and 5100s on solid axle one ton pickups so i cant say how they work on a less stiff suspension. But i like them both.

In essence, the best bet is a nitrogen charged monotube. Summit racing has a filter for how much lift you have which makes getting the right shock easy.

I thought the Excel g were twin tube.
Kyb gas a just and then their shock for lifted trucks are both mono tube for sure, though

But, agreed, monotube is the main thing when picking a shock

Might be. They were on my 02 explorer sport. They work good though.
New ones always feel good. You pay for longevity. If you don't mind changing them out every 2-3 years the cheap pro-comp are great when new. With that said I switched to Bilstein 7100.

Agreed. But FWIW, i beat the living piss out of those skyjacker Nitros in high school. They went through many high speed jumps with full suspension droop. Never had an issue with em. I would land flat on all fours, compress, rebound and then one more small compression. Until the time i landed on just the passenger side and said thats enough!

I have the PC ES3000 on my bronco currently. They do fine but dont have many miles on em. My suspension is super old and soft. I plan on upgrading at some point.
For factory height the KYB Gas-a-Just are a great shock that lasts a long time. I only use my 6 shocked Bronco for DD, Highway and Towing, they (work, handle & ride great) and last a long time 100K plus miles. They are also very cost effective. I don't know how they handle off-roading though but they feel the same now as they did when I first installed them 93,400 miles/8 years ago. They also make a cheaper stock replacement Excel-G (mentioned by @BigBlue 94 above) and an Upgrade from the Gas-a-Just the MonoMax and a 2-3" lifted MonoMax shock. See the link below:

For the rear I bought these. They raise the rear end about a half inch and helps to firm up the spring when rear end is loaded. Also, alleviates the deep swaying soft bounce in the rear when you hit at speed bump and such. The install was difficult only cuz the spring does not come compressed, so I had to lift the chassis at the tow hitch.
